Photos: INS Tabar pounds pirates (in a fishing trawler!)

The Indian Navy stealth frigate INS Tabar uses its A-190 100-mm canon to smash this pirate mothership to bits on the evening of 18 November, 385 nautical miles south-west of Salalah port in Oman. Congratulations to Capt Pradyut K Banerjee and the entire F44 crew! Shano Varun.Photos Courtesy Indian Navy

  1. holy mackerel.. this is phenomenal!! A-190 eh? sweet. sweet. sweet. showed the bastards eh. 🙂 🙂 post more pix shiv.

  2. any idea as to the number of pirates killed or injured in this action? If the ship went down, some pirates would have gone down with it, presumably

  3. What a blitzkreig.

So now, all those people who are saying that the military is useless and communal, and all those politicos who have allowed the good name of the army, built over 300 years to be tarnished by a media hungry and pay commission minded IB and ATS, what is happening on the 6th CPC issues? It is quite clear why we need our armed forces. Look at the good work they do!

  4. hey indian assholes.. you just destroyed a thai fishing boat! and every indian fanboy is mentaly masturbating to this fake news..

  6. If the Thai claim is correct then it would be a major diplomatic faux pas…
I think the Govt needs to be proactive and take up for Navy. The statements on this incident should come from Def ministry and not Navy henceforth.
Under no circumstances should the Navy be put under scanner.. they did what was right at the time.
The Government needs to take up responsibility as Tabar was sent on the directive of GOI only.

Also how about investigations? Strange that the id of the destroyed ship is still not certain after such a long time. Are’nt there any standard navy procedures!! You cant just destroy a ship and move on!!

  7. More like Indian Navy pounds hapless Thai fishing vessel, but as has been questioned on Information Dissemination, what was a Thai fishing vessel doing there in the first place?

  8. destroyed thai fishing boat hijacked by the Pirates and being used as mother ship…for fother screwing some one like you…

    You ass hole…!!!!!!

  9. ^^^^^^^
    and you paki a** hole…
Your president confesses yesterday that your country is too small to handle the pirates and the Navy is now doing fishing jobs to control your economic downturn. Finally you got some money from IMF that you have been begging for longtime. If you want more, beg to Indians, we will consider something also for you.

The patrol ship have all the right to shot down a ship, whether it is a trawl or a pirate ship when it threatens to blow it.

I always wonder how you people in Paki Navy use frigates and corvettes for fishing. Other countries should learn this technique.

  10. Most probably this was a joint venture of pirates active in Malacca straits and those in Somalia

Indian Navy has come across many thai trawlers sometimes poaching in Indian waters and at other times involved in gun running for LTTE

This is a good lesson for these Thai mercenaries who will do anything illegal for money

Why would the bloody pirates sieze a trawler? Think.

  11. ^^

    1. Suggest above comment be deleted for obscenity.

    2. Pirates get their vessels by capturing them. Alas, they cannot just pick one up at the local bait and tackle. If this Thai companys fishing boat was taken over by pirates, as it admits it was, then it was henceforth a pirate ship.

Even a moron, looking at the pictures of the afterexplosions can tell that the thing was full of ammo. And if it was populated by chaps firing at a frigate, heading on a ram course for the INS Tabar, then too bad, bub, but its going up in flames.

This Thai chap seems to be trying to make the best of a boat lost to piracy, by trying to get the Indian govt to pay for it.

If got one word for him: Insurance.

If you dont have it, dont put out to sea, off the coast of Somalia, where you know that pirates abound.

Anyway, I dont know what he was fishing for. Thai and Cambodian pirates are well known. Fishin’ in troubled waters, perhaps?

  12. Regarding the Thai trawler story, two issues stand out:

    1. Apparently, the Indian Navy is not directly plugged into the International Maritime Bureau’s piracy reporting centre. I guess, if this report is true, and the indications are that is, then the Indian Navy may want to rectify to avoid such incidents in the future. The reports also say that one of the Royal (British) Navy’s ships did approach the Thai trawler before the INS Tabar but withdrew once it found that pirates had already taken over the trawler.

    2. I wish the Indian Navy would not be so defensive. There is nothing wrong in acknowledging a mistake. Armed forces all over the world have made such – and even greater – errors. The US Navy even shot down an Iranian civilian plane in 1988.

However, what do we see? Instead of saying that we will check to see what really happened, the Navy’s first instinct – like the whole of our government – is to deny that it could have even made an error. And when that becomes untenable, it starts saying that the “behavior” of the trawler was to all intents and purposes like that of a “pirate ship.” This may be true but it amounts to a tacit acknowledgment that the Thai company is correct. The end result is that the Indian Navy looks silly.

  13. Hey PAKI asshole(4.05am), its not true, here are the FACTS:

    1. Why must a fishing boat carry explosives for it to explode? Were they catching a new species called “C4 fish” that caused the explosion?

    2. Why not a fishing trawler stop when a modern frigate asks it to? Were they thinking Indian Navy wants to eat up all their fiah?

    3. Why must a fishing trawler attack a navy frigate?

    4. Why must fishermen threaten to sink a navy frigate?

    5. Why did Indian navy men see black men with RPGs and guns on board the ship? Are Thai men black? Do they fish with lethal weapons?

    5. Why did it take so long for the Thai fishing company to declare that India had in fact sinked a Thai ship?

    6. Noel from Kuala Lumpur declared it was a Thai ship. He has not told how he came to that conclusion. Was he on the INS Tabar during the pounding?

    7. A trawler should fly the flag of a country it is from or where the ship is registered to. Why didn’t the vessel fly a Thai flag in international waters?

    8. Some may say the “Thai trawler” may have not stopped mistaking Indian Navy as pirates. Firstly, INS Tabar had 2 flags, that of the Navy (with insignia) and the flag of India. Any fishermen going into international waters should know the flag of India, especially on the Indian ocean. They usually have a guide book with them. Even so, is it had to mistake a pirate vessel to a 5000 tonne navy frigate with uniformed men on the deck?

    9. After being pounded once, why didn’t they shoot their flares or raise a white flag? All ships in international waters should have these 2 things.

    10. It is established beyond doubt that that was a pirate vessel. By not stopping when asked by the Indian navy and not following international protocol when confromted clearly shows something fishy.

SO, it was not a fishing trawler. It was a FISHY trawler.

At least India has the guts to go out and help take charge of a bad situation, not sit down and await IMF loan to backfill a sinking economy and shut a childish, mad and Mr, 10% president (who dreams of Palin after losing his wife) up from talking anymore things that will damage your crumbling country.

    Grow up!

    Jai Hind!

  15. Don’t lose heart, sailors
Ask any infantry bugger and he will tell you that friendly fire has right of way!
Welcome to the world of blue-over-blue.
    Bash on regardless.
    Tally Ho and all that.

  16. the thai fishing boat was taken over by the pirates and they opened fire on the indian navy ship, now that thai boat was a pirate ship when the indian navy sank it.bravo boys great job sink a few more pirates.

  17. Yes it might have been a thai fishing trawler or blooody USS ENTERPRISE 4 ALL I CARE,but if there were pirates oboard,it becomes a pirate ship!!!!!!If the pirates had taken over the thai fishing vessel, why was the same not reported?what was the owner thinking?

The navy would have folloewd the rules of engagement and fired in defence….Give some allowance to the brains of the CO of the ship…………..

  18. FACTS MR. Pakboy:

    1. The distance between Thailand and Somalia is 6,207.15 km.

    2. Speed of a Commercial Fishing Trawler with displacement hull- not more that 12 knots.

    3. No of crew a Trawler has – usually single crew, in some cases double.

    4. Distance a commercial fishing trawlers can cover without refuelling or having extra fuel tanks – 5,000 km.

    5. Exclusive fishing zone for a country – 320 kms.

So you can infer what a Thai fishing ship was doing near the cost of somalia. Definitely not fishing. I bet it was smuggling weapons or narcotics in Somalia. Either it was captured by the opponent pirates or the pirates on board were the ones the goods were intended to be delivered.
