L&T and EADS JV for Defence Electronics

A brand new defence joint venture. EADS Defence & Security and Indian giant L&T today announced the planned formation of a joint venture company for defence electronics in India, based in Talegaon near Pune. According to a joint statement, the new company will aim at design, development, manufacturing and related services in the fields of electronic warfare, radar, military avionics and mobile systems (such as modular bridges) for military applications.

  1. What in your opinion is the real status of these JVs.

Do you think Government will give its own firms (public and private) competition?
Or will all these firms work for tenders provided by government firms (public and private)?

  2. VERY GOOD MOVE , PRIVATE FIRMS SHOULD TAKE PART IN DEFENSE SUPPLIES, WITHOUT PRIVATE SECTOR PARTICIPATION INDIA COULD NOT FULFILL IT NEEDS .

DRDO ALSO SHOULD CO-RESEARCH / CO-PRODUCE WITH JOINT VENTURES WITH INDIAN FIRMS / ABROAD MANUFACTURES TO GET HIGH TECH WITH FASTRACK.

India need to allow / boost private firms to manufacture / research in producing submarines , india hardly needs massive fleet of submarines to defend india from chinese dragons( navy )..

  3. JVs focusing purely on Indian work will not work unless there is reform in the MoD and Acquistion process because army orders are haphazard and in most cases small.

JVs which focus on integration with the International supply chain only can work. But for that the Foreign OEMs require cap to be raised to 50%. Lets do that I say, creat jobs in India instead of what one journalist said “Indian govt is subsidising foreign private sector players rather than building indigenous capacity”
