The Destroyer of Enemies!

A little LiveFist tribute to the erstwhile ATV, an obscure acronym we can now finally lay to rest. India Today Associate Editor Sandeep Unnithan has uncovered the official name of India’s first indigenous nuclear submarine — INS Arihant, a splendid choice of name — it means “killer of enemies” in Sanskrit. Sandeep has also confirmed that the Prime Minister’s wife Mrs Gursharan Kaur will inaugurate the submarine’s launch ceremony at Visakhapatnam on July 26.

  1. 26th August 2009 will become a Historic day for all of as and India will be joining the club of N-powered Submarine and build that sort of Technology…

INS Arihant is very symbolic name for this sub.

Shiv I want to know that how much armament does it will able to carry because the specification given on Wikipedia suggest that it will carry 12 SLBM or 12 Cruise missile on its vertical launch cell and is it known as ballistic missile submarine or Akula-II class Hunter Killer Submarine, because it is based on Akula-class.

  2. C'mon shiv, we need pictures of the sub, not this silly graphic.

Will you kindly post a couple of good dozen pictures when you go there? Also tell us something new about the sub and its systems.

  3. This is big. whatever may be the name, i dreamt of SSBN in IN for years. This thing is bigger and more important than any land-based ICBM or Agni.

this is the thing that provides ultimate detterance provided it has missiles of that range. It should be launch missiles at Shangai and Beijing from Bay of Bengal itself.

This is will boost our detterance vis-a-vis China.

  4. We have always been good with names. Functionality is the problem, not fancy names.

Tejas is only getting ?????, the name is not saving it. hope ATV fares better.

  5. ya good name ……but they have to reduce the time period of sea trials and commission as fast as they can…….

  6. And will the Arihant be constructed with foreign assistance to a certain degree or just entirely indigenous, like the nuclear power plant and the onboard systems?

    Just asking.

  7. As Michael J(R.I.P.) put it— THIS IS IT! THIS IS IT!!!

    wOW FINALLY……

Thank god, now we are no more confused regarding its name being 'chakra'!! 🙂

  8. coincidentally the apartment complex i live in has been constructed by a company called Arihant Constructions Pvt. Ltd.

  9. finaly the moment hav arraive for the glorries lunch of Nuk powred killersub ………….
this would be the red letter day in INS history………

"But this is only the beggening."
