A Glimpse into India’s Artillery Modernisation Farce

An excerpt from a 2007 Indian Army trial report on the 155-mm towed gun trials. It was after this that the infamous re-tendering happened, after four trial rounds.

  1. it was all congress government ,quite clearly the new fh-77 met all the requirements,it defeated the israeli gun in many fields, but to avoid the ghost of bofors, government cancelled the deal and re-tendered,,yet another example of how politicians compromise on national security for their vested interests,,

  2. ATHOS doens't stand a chance against FH77

ATHOS is nothing but WW2 era howitzer in new pack.

    ironically there was no M777

  3. Looks like the Bofors gun meet or exceed 99% of the requirements. Amazing sustained rate of fire!

    Let's buy this gun already.

  4. Excellent post. After all these trials the gov wants a re-tender! What is the logic or purpose behind this re-tendering?

  5. So the army should have had the FH77 BW L52 – Archer.

Amazing, i hope when the soldiers cry for some fire we toss the great indian politicians and babbus.

  6. Shiv,

Inspite of meeting all the technical parameters perfectly during the four round of trials in India, what is the problem Indian Army is facing to acquire the latest FH-77 BW L52 towed guns. Moreover BAE system now acquired the bofors company, no longer a Swedish company. Is it because of political problems? Why Indian Army not coming to the media to raise such issue?

  7. Shall we call an all india bandh to protest! we nenver get what we want but we always get what we do not want! the situation is same in every deal! bloody hell!

  8. [email protected]: a detailed special report on the re-tender was broadcast on Headlines Today in 2007 itself, when the re-tender was called. this document dates back to that time, and it was part of the special report that ran on HT. i only posted it here considering the general discourse doing the rounds on the execrable, jinxed state of India's arty modernisation.

  9. anon at 9.36 pm, this was not only done by Headlines Today, but also covered and done in Mail Today also in 2007 itself.

  10. sry i dint knw. sadness MoD will nvr learn only money money,,,

    Indeed.

Greed is the root cause of the incompetence of the MoD corrupt cronies. You'd wished they be sacked, for the sake of the defense of India.

  11. The BOFORS gun india currently operates is the FH-77-B Habitus,

The gun in this trial is the Archer FH-77-BW on a Volvo A-30D truck chasis.

The first bofors gun doesn't meet the GSQR, the Archer version does. This is why Gen JJ Singh said that the FH77B doesn't meet the criteria, he is right.

Bottom line is that the Bofors gun is the best available out there, its combo of the excalibur shell and the BONUS Sensor-fuzed Artillery Shell is THE best out there.
