India’s Nag ATGM Hits The Spot At Close Range

The Indian Nag anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) was test-fired successfully at close range (500-metres – sorry for the earlier typo!) at the Army field firing range at Shamirpet in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. The Hindu quotes Nag project director SS Mishra as saying that final trials are slated for July.

  1. Shiv,

5000m means 5km which is not close range. It is maximum range. If it is tested for half a kilometer, then it must be 500 meter.

    c

  2. From the picture it looks like some VERNIER engines are placed at the tail root ends of the NAG ATGM.
Is it for thrust control? or for better stability during flight?

  3. Good Job.
I wonder if the NAG FCS/Launch system is modular and not specific to a NAMICA BMP.
It would be quite cost effective and desirable if the system can be mounted on wheeled vehicles for greater speed and mobility.

  4. Nag…Namica…Helinag…

Somehow I feel, the Nag suite is the only one that ever got a proper name series from an Indian defense/space bureau…

PSLV/GSLV/LCA/ATV/MALE/LCH/LUH…what are they? A pathetic excuse for a name that tends to stick on forever…Hope they don't start an FMBT…

  5. And pray why doesn't it work at long range ? the whole missile program is a farce – a 'tactical' missile that is no better than a V2 of WW2 fame. A copy of the Milan which is a 'Nag'. A copy of the SA6 Gainful which is Akash. And of course "technology demonstrators" that can and I quote "shower flowers if required". Ridiculous.

  6. For how long has Nag been undergoing "final" user trials? I have been hearing of final trials for almost ten years.

  7. @ KVR
well!well ! If u really think, wotevr india produce is piece of crap dan y dunchu leave dis place ? ? U sounds more lyk pokies or chincom nd if u nt dan betta join DRDO nd prove ya point…

  8. THE NAG HAS ALREADY PROVED IT SELF IN FULL RANGE TRIAL IF IT IS A UPGRADE OF THE MILAN THEN SO BE IT IF THE AKASH IS UPGRADE OF THE GAINFULL SO BE IT, IT REQUIRES KNOWLEDGE TO UPGRADE THE ALREADY EXISTING THATS WHY PEOPLE GET UPGRADED STUFF BECAUSE THEY KNOW IT IS BETTER THAN THE PREVIOUS VERSION ALSO AFTER THAT THEY GO AHEAD AND ADD NEW STEREO NEW SCILENCERS AND EVEN NOS NOW I KNOW WHY INDIA IS NOT PROGRESSING IT IS BECAUSE OF PEOPLE WHO KNOW ONLY TO CRITISE WHY DOES ANY ONE IN NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES DO THAT

  9. There is nothing chest thumping about this performance. As someone else has already pointed put these trials have been going on and on. And its my taxes that are funding this – so I have a right to talk . Anyone who presents a contrary view is not a Porki . And of course learn to type proper English and not sms lng.And as you can see I am not hiding behind an "Anonymous" moniker.

  10. @KVR
"And pray why doesn't it work at long range ?"
who said it doesn't work at long range.Proving short range capability was one of the “Qualitative Requirements” (QRs) from the Army.
It is tested at it's maximum range many times and it proved itself that is why it is being inducted.

  11. @ KVR , m nt swelling ot becoz of success which is already present in other developd countries bt its a quiet n acievement 4 a country lyk india whr we invest a mere US400m $ in defence related R&D … Btw ma english is so gud , sowie 4 urs which is still @ elementary level m8.

  12. Again @ KVR , u talkin bot V2 missile lol ,m so thrilld with ur so calld intelligence .. Nyway would u lyk 2 elabrote V2 nd ny indian missile or u got nother point 2 prove here bud ? ? ….Akash SAM 1 of da best systen in indian subcontient region nd i dun c ny 1 disagree with its accuracy, cost ,verstality in indian condition nd dun forget its tactical nuclear warhead carryin ability which is nt PRESENT IN UR CHINCOMS or PORKIZ arsenal…

  13. Hi Dementors,

Its not Helinag, its Helina (the air-surface version of Nag) developed for Light Combat Helicopter. It has an extended range and can fire upto 8 Km.

  15. @kvr ok do you even understand the concept of Anti Tank Msl. This is not a long range tac msl but a precision guided anti tank msl specifically designed to engage armoured targets.
Nag is not a copy of Milan 2 as Milan 2 uses a line of sight guidance to track the target. However Nag is a generation above Milan 2 as it is lock on fire and forget msl. The operator does not have to continually track the target after the launch. Seriously KVR did you just look at the shape of Nag and Milan2 and assume they must be same or a copy ? i have seen 5 year old kids do that.
