India Tests Advanced Interceptor Missile In User Config

DRDO Statement: India’s DRDO today conducted a successful test launch of its endo-atmospheric interceptor missile., part of the country’s ballistic missile defence (BMD) programme DRDO’s Air Defence Missile AAD-05  (Photo 1) successfully hit a modified Prithvi ballistic missile (Photo 2) and destroyed it at a height of 15 kms off the coast of Orissa near Wheeler Island. Radars located at different locations tracked the incoming ballistic missile. With the target trajectory continuously updated by the radar, the onboard guidance computer guided the AAD-05 towards the target missile. The onboard radio frequency seeker identified the target missile, guided the AAD-05 to hit the target missile directly and destroyed it. Radar and Electro Optic Tracking Systems (EOTS) tracked the missile and also recorded the fragments of the target missile falling into the Bay of Bengal.  The interceptor hit the incoming ballistic missile directly and destroyed it at an altitude of 15-km. The mission was carried out in the final deliverable user configuration mode.

  1. When DRDO says this…
"The mission was carried out in the final deliverable user configuration mode."

Only success of this test can not be base for saying that now we have the capability to defend our country form any future Nuclear Conflict?

What will happen when our enemy fires barrages(say 50-70 in numbers) nuclear tipped missiles simultaneously,Ballistic as well as Cruise missiles targeted towards New Delhi,Mumbai,Pune and other cities ??

We need to test this AAD and PAD solutions against ICBMs(which has very high speed re-entry process as well as terrain hugging cruse missiles launched from Land Air and Sea…all at a time ?

Also we need the detecting those missiles from a greater ranges ..e.g. more than 500 KMs …which is the case now/for this test.

We need space based systems to first detect those missile and later Track and Kill (100% Assurance)..then only we can say that as a reliable ABM/ACM system.
    Not before that.

Still I congratulate to our DRDO managers and scientists for their hard work in achieving this first milestone!

    Regards,

all said and congrates to DRDO guys, but the real success will matter the day a Agni missile is intercepted in exo atmosphere (above 15 km). of the 7 BMD test 1 failed and of the rest only 1 or perhaps 2 have been exo atmosphere that too using prithvi missiles, Food for thought for DRDO

    Thanks

  3. if a barrage of 50-70 N-missiles is fired they will be detected easier at their launch sites- we dont have spy satellites, AWACS and other intelligence sources for nothing..i think the faster it will be detected. and dont worry we also have aggressor missiles of our own to deter any nonsense from any of our 'close friends".. even though its in developmental stages – atleast we could appreciate the developmental efforts and congratulate the scientists…we know the capabilities of our good friends.. lets also invest a little faith in our country's forces/scientists as well..Jai Hind!!!

  4. i m not sure but chines r more advance stage in BMD just like HQ-9,S-400 it nutrlize AGNI and other front paki babar missile r not defacted by AAD PAD

  5. It is a positive development for India. But we need to travel far and develop world class systems and continuesly update these systems so that we can keep up with the continued development and advancement made by other missile powers

  6. @716
there is no system that can withstand an attack that is more than its capacity!!…if you make systems that can destroy 50 the Q will be what if the enemy fired 100…and so on

even the space based system will be overwhelmed by numbers beyond its capacity

  7. sir when will the pdv missile be tested ??? And for this test i congratulate all the defence scientists and staff at drdo 🙂

  8. Hi this is just one of the components of the MDS there are 2 components more this is just for quick stop gap the other 2 for long range and medium range are still undergoing trials so if a missile attacks we have 3 chances or intercepting the same also if missiles are fired in barges the counter will be in barges and followed by our nuke barges

  9. Please note/remember..the Chineese development in the BMD space..
Chineese ASAT test…it killed a 750 KG warhead:-) (satelite) which was orbiting around in 900 Kms orbital and at a speed 8 Km/Sec…more than speed of a typical ICBM. Even US's latest ASAT test to validate their AEGIS BMD system using modified SM-3 ASAT missile had a range not more than 550 Km.

What these tests means is US,China can detect ( have long range radar/systems), track and destroy(have very high speed systems which can cancalculate based on tracking data and FORECAST THE IMPACT POINT on a 3-D environment/plane and then guide those high speed interceptors most accurately towards the speeding ICBMs travelling around 7 Kms /Sec at a range more than 500 Kms.
    What we have ?

Chineese even tried to buy a Laser Systems R&D company in Australia to bring the latest Laser (Beam and Pulsed both) technologies so as to develop their own Laser based BMD/ASAT systems.

Have we done any thing in the laser technologies other than establishing a R&D center to play with laser..?

Future BMD systems will be based on Pulsed Laser Energy Throw/Gun systems…US,Russia,China and Israel is working on that.
Us has a Laser Beam based ABM research station(Airborne Laser Testbed (ALTB)) on a Boeing 747,which had successfully killed a ICBM too..some time back.

Russia has a ground based 20 KWT powered laser killer system to kill Space based system.

    We need to wake up…

    Regards,

  10. The missile interception was probably all hard-programmed! Nothing real time about it! Just a propaganda and public relations stunt for the not-so-smart gullible, jingoistic Indians to make them feel more proud about their junk country.

  11. To – Anon at 4:30 pm…

If your junk country fires any
N-missiles on us, mister, this system will immediatly attack them and cause the N-warhead to explode right on YOUR territory, before it can reach India…

Thank you…just making you realise the efficiancy of these technologies and the inferiority complex and backwardness of YOUR country…

Naysayers will keep an negative attitude. Its just their nature. But look it from an neutral perspective, the Nuclear Missile Defense is extremely difficult to master and we have had perhaps the highest rate of successful interception. Also, the cash infusement is tiny when compared to what other nations had spent on BMD and we really have a huge achievement. This is IMHO the most important tech for Indian defense as one of our neighbor is prime sponsor of terror and plays nuclear card every time. Take that away and they will be reduced to nothing.

  13. @ 4:30 "The missile interception was probably all hard-programmed" . well how u can do that? Dont tell stupid blah blah. Intercepting a missile is still a difficult task

  14. NSR says —

Truly great achievement…very few countries have programs that hits directly…it is called hit-to-kill (HTK) technology and that is the only technology that guarantees the destruction of warheads…

These are all solid fuel interceptors…

There are no hard coded or hard wired missiles in this kind of interception as we never know how the target behaves…
So surveillance radar provides launch of target and identifies its flight path and finds the fire control solution for the interceptor…and then it is launched and the radar transmits the target data to align the interceptor to reach it and destroy it…

Really great achievement and they need to pour in money to develop this missile so that Pakistan will not enter Indian airspace at all…

May be we should by few batteries of S-400 missile system and station them along china and Pakistan frontiers until we develop our own…

Good luck to scientists and India…

They need to fine tune by testing for some more years to consistently put it up and demonstrate their accuracy inn single and ripple fires…
