Govt Considering A 2nd Akula-II

With INS Chakra at Jetty X, Visakhapatnam. | Photo: Sandeep Unnithan
Been a beautiful (but blazingly hot) couple of days at Visakhapatnam — hope you folks enjoyed the photos and video. Not a lot of better ways to spend some time out from Delhi like hanging with submariners. Met and caught up with some old friends in the navy, met some Kilo-class submarine commanders (finally got myself a Kilo hat), made some new friends. Sadly didn’t get much of a chance to interact with the CO of INS Chakra, Captain P. Asokan. Godspeed and happy hunting to him and his crew.

Incidentally, the Defence Minister said today that the government was considering a proposal to lease a second Akula-II from Russia. That’s two. Some say we need eight SSNs. Oh well.

  1. Get all the Akulas you can. China is increasing their inventory of nuke subscribe like crazy. You can never have too many nuke subs.

  2. really..!! blazing hot and a black shirt..? India Today's piece on V K Singh is shameful…have you guys sold out?

  3. We need atleast 15 nuclear submarines – mix of SSN and SSBN to counter Chinese nuke subs and then also Chinese and Pak conventional subs. The subs will also be needed to protect Indian interests in East Asia and African regions in the future when the race for oils, sea-bed minerals etc intensifies

  4. Waiting for a day when We induct 50 of these with Brahmos SSN Arihant upgraded version.

Leasing and buying makes us no superpower only a puppet who pays some price for junk tech. Like most arab states.

  5. How come Shiv? your blog is not filled with Coup stories !! That Shekhar Ghuptu (your old boss) is after the Armed Forces since his IPKF days !

  6. HEY SHIV,
IS IT TRUE THAT AS PER THE LEASE AGREEMENT INS CHAKRA CANNOT BE USED BY THE NAVY IF A WAR BROKES OUT.(ACCORDING TO A ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN THE HINDU ON 25TH JAN,2012 NAMED "IS THE NAVY'S NEWEST SUB WORTH THE PRICE")

  7. India needs 30 plus nuclear submarines to manage future threats and protect interests in nearby theatres of operation. The defence ministry should have a plan to churn out atleast 3 nuclear submarines every 2 year similars to what the Russians did in the 1980s. It is a tough task but can be done if the ministry shows resolve to make the country strong

  8. Shiv,

Been reading some crazy comments that India is not allowed to use this SSN for offensive purposes..as per tems of the lease agreement.

What crap is that? Is it true?

Pls. clarify? If true, what blood good is having this boat?

I am assuming it is not true..but pls. clarify – since ur right in the middle of the action right now

    thxs

    Vishal

  9. anon@7:28 PM,
    NO,he did not…..
    shiv,
stop milking the armed forces by misusing the army connections…you and your friend sandeep unnithan…..and yeah, tell him to change his cap the next time…………..

  10. Shiv,
From where you are standing on this picture, the covered Arihant berth is right in front of you – you are looking right at where the Arihant docks.
Did you see her in the covered dockyard X? Or was she out at sea for trials?

  11. Never mind,
On closer inspection of the pictures you posted, the Arihant is not inside the covered dock any more, it is at sea for trials.

  12. LOL. govt. considering another akula. If govt. is serious in considering another akula then it will take from now another 30 years hopefully by 2040 we will get it. Also the financial year has come to an end but still no news for signing rafale deal.

  13. Pls can ne 1 clarify.. Mostly i have read that half of our sub fleet is inactive but ive found that the entire kilo fleet have been refurbished and also the HDW 209 ones

  14. 1 more akula and then we should go for 2 baracuda to have more exposure to such technology and use the best from both our own indigenous boomers

  15. For starters all we need and can afford is 3-4 Akulas. We do not need a dozen. That money is better spent elsewhere. The Akula is an attack boat and not a boomer.

That with 2 Arihants is enough for a nation to have a credible under sea arm and deterrent.

  16. I've seen pics with people and sportcars…but this one takes passion to the next level. Simply awesome. I can only think of the excitment in you before you got to see INS Chakra.

Your doing a fantastic job with Livefist. This pic with INS Chakra should go up on your wall as one of the best.

  17. The Project 75I tender for six more submarines has been 'considered' since 2006. By the time AK Antony's corrupt, lazy and incompetent UPA Defence Ministry makes a decision on this Russia will already have scrapped the remaining under-construction Akula and recycled its hull for a new Borei class submarine(as has been done to all the other unfinished Akulas).

Unless we have an NDA defence ministry in 2012 and makes a speedy decision the second Akula-2 will remain a pipedream.

  18. BTW if the UPA was really so interested in Russian unfinished subs they could have inked deals for
-The second Akula(Irbis) under construction at the Amur shipyard
-The Belgorod and 2 other Oscar class cruise missile subs under construction
-The 2 Typhoon class ballistic missile subs that have been kept in reserve pending a refit.
