More Funds For Delayed Indian Carrier: Report

Following confirmation of at least a five year delay in the indigenous aircraft carrier programme, the Indian government will shortly approve a further $362-million towards the beleagured programme, reports NDTV.

As I reported here in August, the new Vikrant, won’t be commissioned before 2017.

  1. Maybe we should just give up trying to build things. Apparently, the best technical talent has left the country. We should just buy a carrier instead…and not from Russia.

  2. It would be better if India buy aircraft carrier from USA. Russian weapons are useless and when it come to delivery it always delay.

US aircraft carrier care more aircraft, advance radars, and very well more protection. They could deliver weapons on time.

  3. Mr. Aroor, why do you use adjectives lie "beleagured" for the indigenous IAC, whereas no such agony was expressed vis-a-vis the Russian Gorshkov, that has been haemorraging Indian money since the dawn of time ?

The same applies to Mr. Rajat Pandit of the Times of India.

Besides, Rs. 20 million is just 2 crore ! Peanuts, nay, the skin of peanuts compared to what India flushed waste on Gorshkov !!

  4. Waste of time and energy to build the IAC, invest the same money to buy it from other countries other than Russia since india requires only 2 such ships. There is something fishy in pouring money into a dead end project. Tax payers money wasted. No lessons learnt from LCA Tejas. Will Tejas see the induction into IAF? Similar fate with MBT Arjun.

  5. @Jake Lor
US carriers are the culmination of a century's worth of carrier operation experience. The US will never sell her aircraft carriers, least of all to a country so friendly with Moscow.

I recommend India purchases the Soviet blueprints for the Ulyanovsk class nuclear powered supercarriers with steam catapults. This is what a real carrier should look like! If India can get hold of those blueprints, India could churn out a dozen and equal the American navy both in quantity and quality.

  6. I don´t know why you people always criticize our indigenous developments?? We should encourage our local defense developments.

DO you guys want India should launch IAC 1 VIKRANT in 2013-14 as a floating vessel only? Come on guys, if we are making something by our own then we should support this instead of condemn this. Aircraft carrier needs technology, strength, speed, stealth, deadly weapons and for all these we need infrastructure,,,, It´s unanimous that, for every first product development every country needed time.

India is learning also with this development because we are not ancient aircraft carrier developers. Technical know how is very crucial for such gigantic warship. So, rather than developing a obnoxious and useless product its better to take time. SO it´s an opportunity and challenge among our scientists and engineers to develop a sophisticated carrier and we all Indians should support them.

    Be strong, be Indian !!!!

  7. I would say that a project of such a big proportion, being done for the first time in India would have required for technical & manufacturing experience support from countries who have done it before.

It's good to GO IT alone, but there's only so far this project can reach.

Coming to timelines, I've said it time and again. The MoD has formulate proceedures for project review and evaluation and make sure a 'Culture of maintaining timelines and accountibility' is engrained in the system. The private sector is doing and meeting this. I cannot see any reason why the public sector cannot follow the same.

  8. whos selling carriers than russia !!:P….hope they just complete it, cause am pretty sure watever we type here of the responsible people are gonna see

  9. $362 million is not a big amount, considering how much India spends on buying from other countries. Delays are expected, even for a country like USA F-35 is delayed. So where we stand is already known. But we can try to reverse engineer.

  10. I believe it is a typo ……NDTV report says a fund of Rs 2000 crores has been allocated for INS Vikrant….So it should be 20 billions instead of 20 millions

  11. What we are getting for 2.3 billion is an obsolete carrier that cannot reach 30 knots speed and would be in dock for most of the time for repairs.A new new Nimitz class carrier cost 6.2 billion and caries almost 4 times the planes.and would have a life of almost 30 years. It is bad decision as well as blackmailing by rosonboronexport which charges exorbitant for repairs.I feel evan if takes time and extra money Vikrant must be developed as it is future investment and it should take 5 more years and with good management and planning with synchronized effort 1 year can be gained. That would help in building next IAC.It is better to spend in learning than exorbitant pricing for spares. What happened to vikramaditya is at Indian tax dollars Russian industry has learned to build aircraft carrier which can carry a small load of fighter planes and helicopters which is nothing compared to American carriers.

  12. ins arihant & LCA TAJAS take 30 year for 80% compete not wonder when IAC TAKE 15 or 10 year when china have station 1 a/c carrir in indian ocan,1 in south china sea and 1 in routine patrolling.

  13. Look at China…. very soon they will have a flotilla of carriers… ingeniousness/stolen/copied/or whatever. India has had carriers for decades and could not inflate the numbers. Pak will soon catch up with India.

  14. iac delay is mainly due to a road accident coused the gears to be damaged, and re send it to manufacturers, that sould have been avoided , used a transport through sea will be preferable, still it is very good progress, i am confident of commissioning the carrier on time, or just 2,3 year delay, compared to delay in other defence programs its nothing

  15. The People's Republic of China is expected to build two nuclear aircraft carriers based on the Project 1143.7 Ulyanovsk class design for some of the PLAN future Chinese aircraft carriers.

    Wikipedia says ;where r v???????????

  16. This was expected and it's totally normal, in my humble opinion.

People who are talking about buying US CV are dreaming. US don't sell its CVs, and nobody but Americans themselves can purchase, support and operate this kind of ships. CV by itself is almost useless — it need its air wings, battle group, infrastuctures and logistic support. Also, it designed to operate world-wide, with cooperation with other NATO fleets.

About Russian CV – it's sufficient for Indian Navy. It's not the biggest one, nor most modern by design, but it's the best IN could get, and for it's price it is still a bargain (if we consider realistic time tables and costs and not the PR figures). There are no more unfinished CVs in the world now – there were only two. One Ukrainian was sold to China, and one Russian was sold to India.

  17. Flash news!!!

The Chinese landing the 1st J-15 successfully onto their carrier today. Reported by BBC.

India better get it's act together. We cannot afford anymore delays to our various carrier programs.

  18. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-20484592

India is falling behind fast in indigenous technical capability against the chinese who are moving steadily forward in all strategic areas. The Chinese are apparently masters at reverse engineering, copying and stealing technology. India has to do the same or else it will be a 'Red Dawn' (upcoming movie on Chinese invasion of US) for India at some point in the not too distant future.
