Reactor Goes Critical, 1st Indian N-Sub Ready For Sea

Great news overnight: Its 83MW pressurized water reactor finally going critical, India’s first indigenous nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine Arihant is finally ready to leave harbour and enter a phase of sea trials in the Bay of Bengal.
With ballistic missiles and air delivery in place, the Arihant and its sister boats (India plans to build three, with the second hull already ready) will form the final leg of India’s nuclear deterrent triad.
Congratulations too all scientists on the Arihant programme, Indian Navy DRDO, Dept of Atomic Energy and Shipbuilding Centre, Visakhapatnam. Shano Varuna!

The Indian Prime Minister made the following statement a few minutes ago: I am delighted to learn that the nuclear propulsion reactor on board INS Arihant, India’s first indigenous nuclear powered submarine, has now achieved criticality. I extend my congratulations to all those associated with this important milestone, particularly the Department of Atomic Energy, the Indian Navy and the Defence Research and Development Organization. Today’s development represents a giant stride in the progress of our indigenous technological capabilities. It is testimony to the ability of our scientists, technologists and defence personnel to work together for mastering complex technologies in the service of our nation’s security. I look forward to the early commissioning of the INS Arihant.

  1. A Great news after long wait. But courage is not depended on weapon system. Nor it can be purchased from aboard by money. Any one did not understand me see what is happening in northern land with both China and napakistan. Army has to be battle hardened not shy away and some pretest.

  3. A great news after long await. Mere possion of great weapons can't deter an enemy. It must me backed by geninue courage use it if our interest are threatened. This unlike the weapons can't be purchased from aboard. An army that is not battle hardened generally shy away from situations by blaming circumstances. Look what is happening in northern land boarder with napakistan and China. Defence ministry come very late into picture by the time battle can be finished and honour saved but that is not happening. The Pakistan soldiers is not provided one tenth of the facility that our soldiers are having but they have delivered. Morality can be left to thinkers to justify after the battle. May lord Krishna guide you.

  4. I fully agree with Vinod. What is the use of spending billions of dollars on defense equipments, if the UPA Govt. is not willing to take an offensive stand against Pakistan and China. Defense equipments are kept as show pieces in India.

  5. On reading the above comments there is a deep sense of disgust, mistrust of the current government to deal with treacherous enemies on the west and east side of the border. Even though many lethal weapons are added to the armoury but no will to act. This is nothing but cowardice exhibited by UPA.
