Indian All-Clear For $2.5b Deals For Apaches & Chinooks

It’s effectively all-clear from India for two key deals with Boeing Defense for 22 AH-64D Apache Block III and Block III Longbow attack helicopters and 15 CH-47F Chinook heavy lift transport helicopters for the Indian Air Force. The Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by defence minister Arun Jaitley, approved necessary offsets clearances to allow the deal forward; both deals now have a cursory stop at the apex Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) before they’re up for signing. Indications are that the deals could be signed before Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits the U.S. next month or shortly after.

  1. Didn't need Apache with our own attack helicopter coming along so nicely. Chinook order is too small. Should be at least 48

  2. I do not understand y we r spending hard earned foreign exchange on 22 attack helicopters.Isn‘t our Rudra and LCH good enough. The IAF it seems wants to import everything under the sun even if desi equipment is good enough.Anyway 22 apaches hardly make any difference if a war breaks out.High in the Himalayas they will be sitting ducks for chinese Manpads.

  3. Hey Shiv,

What is the offset clearance all about? What kind of offsets are being given by Boeing in these two deals?

  4. At least the Indian Army and Airforce know Russian equipment sucks and is turd. I bet the circle jerk at Bharat Ratshit is crying. American equipment is the class of the class. Thankfully the sane people in India know this to be true.

  5. The nos involved are too small . for any meaningful offensive and cold start doctrine or offensive defence , 10 times the nos are required . Why does not the modi govt encourage
americans to set up manufacturing facilties in india with indian manpower and materials so that the cheap labour can turn out pieces at third or one fourth the american price . Top mangement designers , production engineers and a few sensitive items can be transferred from american companies . This way american armed forces get units cheap and can also export to other allies .

    1. It's just start first 22, and second 39 for army and number or Apaches in future because DRDO&HAL work on indian LCH very slow and take another 10 to 15 years. First LCH was fly in 2010. Currently two prototype testing after testing DRDO&HAL fail now they re-design and take two and three years more then they test flying two years more then they testing weapons and take two and three years more and then get IOC then FOC. Finely LCH in assembly line and first they rollout first six next year eight and third years 16. So no choice for IAF and IA go for Apaches. DRDO@HAL sucks

  6. Understand one things who said that they are sitting ducks for chinese manpads? These are the first line of attack against the Paki tanks..Paki tanks never ever dare to stand in aggressive lineup if they know that Indians fielding the Longbows…Secondly in high altitude warefare these machines will never went in alone it will be LCH + Longbow combination..These are tank killers pakis will shit in their pants once these birds came..Its not 22 only .. its 22 + 39(for army).. with more in line if required through FMS.

  7. Contrary to what people say about chinooks and apaches, i feel that we should go for them as tactics and strategy improves as out jawans get more exposure with the new vehicles. This increases their envelop to think and strategies and gets to know the best of the world. Even weapons experience help build better helos of tomorrow, so a win win
