Astra BVR missile successfully tested

Press Release: DRDO has successfully conducted two flight tests of Astra beyond Visual Range Air to Air missile on 13 and 14 Sept 2008 from Interim Test Range, Balasore as part of second phase of missile development flight trials. The missiles were launched from a Ground launcher. The main objective of these flight tests were to test mid course guidance of missiles towards manoeuvring target Aircraft using secured data link. Simulated aircraft flight parameters were used for these flight tests. All missile systems comprising of launcher, propulsion, Airframe, mission computer, navigation system, autopilot , flight control system, data link and telemetry system have worked satisfactory and as per design. The team led by Shri Venugopalan, Director, DRDL, Hyderabad, Dr Gollakota, Project Director, Astra, Shri SP Dash, Director, ITR, Balasore, project team and representatives of participating Industry participated successful launch of Astra conducted at Chandipore test range.

  2. if this missile becomes a success we have catched up with france which has MICA,but ASTRA has french seeker.
    but we need this missile deployed soon not after 3-4 years when ramjet missiles with better range are available

    chinese SD 10 has russian seeker.
    they are selling them to pakistan.

  3. Even if the Astra missile is good as they claim it is..they could have spared the “most advanced BVR in existence thing” in press releases..same goes for Arjun,LCA and all..Its somewhat nauseating ..its like the paki brags..of babur and all..
    atleast we in india..dont have the habit of lying like hell..like pakis do..Just state what the test shows…and even if that was avg no probs..better luck next time..no need for bragging..

  4. nice clean burn..looks like a neat propellant..don’t they need some extra boosters to launch from the ground launcher..?so if they can pull off a ground launch..does that mean..we will have a good SAM too like Spyder system..?
    Awesome..hope they could pull off a laser fuse..we havnt really conquered the full spectrum of seeker technologies..like millimetric-IIR and stuff..they day we master them..that will be one hell of a day..

  5. now WAIT A MINUTE… this is an air-to-air missile, when the hell are they going to test it air-to-air?

    I dont understand what they are trying to prove with these ground tests. Almost 80% of the testing would be wrto attaching this to an airframe, how smoothly it gets released, impact of the plume on the aircraft intakes, how it chases and destroys an actual target, and most importantly how it performs at designed altitudes and ranges…

    Can someone explain what was so successful about this test? was an actual target destroyed? how close are ground environments to actual release from aircrafts? As I remember it, this test was supposed to be from an Su30

  7. i agree with kannan… these days all systems by drdo are the best, state-of-the-art or most advanced.
    We never know when they do something really good. 🙁
