Mark-2 of DRDO’s Electro-Optical Fire Control System for Navy

DRDO chief M Natarajan visiting the IRDE laboratory and being shown an in-development Mark-2 version of the lab’s EON-51 Electro-Optical Fire Control System (EOFCS) for the Indian Navy. According to DRDO literature, the improved MK-II has has a gyro-stabilised electro-optical director with three electro-optical sensors (second generation thermal imager, high repetition rate laser rangefinder, high resolution CCD camera, and operator control console). The EOFCS is capable of passive search, detection, and tracking of targets operating at sea and strategic shore installation, shore navigation during silent radar operation, accurate target tracking and ranging, day and night gun fire control solution for weapon delivery. Oh, by the way, later today, an official announcement will be made appointing Pradeep Kumar the next Defence Secretary. Incumbent Vijay Singh, currently in Paris with the PM’s delegation, retires at the end of the month. Pradeep Kumar is currently Secretary, Defence Production.

  1. Why are we still obsessed with second generation thermal imager when the world has moved to third gen uncooled types.

  2. electro-optical sensors -Imported

    (second generation thermal imager -Imported
    laser rangefinder -Imported
    high resolution CCD camera -Imported

    What else

  3. This is a cruel joke. Just because I assemble a computer from components like motherboard, RAM, CPU does not mean I actually know how to build a computer.

DRDO is just assembling stuff. That too 1.5 to 2 generations behind what is available in west. Utterly pathetic. Why waste tax payer money on this shit, better spend that money on better wearable armour for troops.

  4. Is this true? if everything is imported one, what's it that DRDO did in this case…There has to be something DRDO did otherwise why call it locally made? ANY GURU out there…
And Shiv… great job.. but onething is you should also answer if comments, to clarify the things for people like me…

  5. Anon@9:51 Pm,
(second generation thermal imager – Made by IRDE
laser rangefinder – Made by IRDE
    high resolution CCD camera -Imported

    But what you didnt include.

Gimballed assembly – designed and developed by ADE and IRDE.
Arguably the hardest to master as it involves stabilization on a moving ship (pitch, roll) versus a similar target.
Also includes autotracking with algorithms developed by IRDE.
This is a fire control system, not a hand held telescope.

Anon@ 5:47 is making a fool out of himself, if he thinks this is equivalent to assembling a computer at home. A better but still imperfect comparison would be designing a computer includign the architecture itself, getting purpose made ICs, making specific larger computing boards using those ICs, and integrating them all into a system for which you make the entire supporting hardware, most of which is not available off the shelf. Not to mention developing the entire OS (stabilisation) and then run the application software on it (autotracking and fire control).

As to 1.5 G behind the west – please lets not be more idiotic. The tag of generations is marketing BS. The thermal imagers developed by IRDE use every bit the same gen detectors the "western" thermal imagers use, and from the same 4 manufacturers worldwide, Sofradir in France which supplies Europe, the US Ray. consortium, the ElOp guys in Israel and Kentron in South Africa.

If you want to waste 2-3 Billion dollars in setting up a niche fab for a detector facility which will require another couple hundred million every year in opex to stay relevant, for a production run of a few TI's – be my guest and bankrupt some other country, not waste my tax money.

  6. woohhh… i understood now… infact great job indeed by DRDO….
MAN that's why we need some better reporting to start with and i guess Shiv is doing great job in that… at least he is making all of us aware that what's happening with Military infra in India…He could improve on this by not just posting the brochers but also writing an easy on it… but then i guess time is the killer

Thanks Anon@8:41 PM… it is very imp to slap back sometimes… not give another cheek as Gandhiji said…
