Indian Army Puts Out Slew Of Small Arms RFIs

The Indian Army is in the market for a series of new small arms systems and accessories. Requests for Information from global contractors have been issued this month for a new 5.56 mm Close Quarter Battle Carbine (CQB Carbine), a new 7.62 mm Light Machine Gun (LMG) — both with optical sights — and a list of eight accessories for its Israeli TAR-21 assault rifles, including telescopic sights, accessory rails, dual magazine clips, self luminous reflex sight for the UBGL and single eye night vision with head band.

The Indian Army has also put out a crucial RFI for the successor to its L-70 and ZU-23MM-2B guns, but more on that later.

  1. about time the well paid but not so well delivering scientist of the DRDO did something about the INSAS, te basic infantryman's weapon. Ask any one and he'll prefer the AK over the INSAS. Why not let the private companies in? I'm sure the TATAs or the L&T or Kirloskars for that matter will come up with a better, more ergonomic and smarter weapon. Even the russian give their weapon designs to private firms/consortiums. But I guess the corrupt Ordnance Factory Boards will not let that appen in the name of indigenisation. After all there are millions to be raked in here.

  2. I agree. Why import Tavor? Can't we design something that's like that? And the INSAS's dirty brown colour can be changed

  3. I agree with above anonymous said. India's first problem is Corruption. Check properties of all politicians and their family. You can get money for 10 Super Carriers and 10 MRCAs ( least expectations ). DRDO and all other government firms are against participation of private firms in this field ? Why, because they can not stand in front of the competition posed by private firms. And may be then they have to work properly. I am sure they are just sitting there and doing almost nothing
