ARJUN MBT: A Retrospective On Its Transmission System

The first two shots are pages from the April 1985 edition of the Indian Defence Science Journal, in which M Natarajan, widely considered to be the father of the Arjun tank project, and who retired last year as Chief of DRDO, writes about the Arjun’s transmission which was then being attempted indigenously. The last grab shows you the transmission that the Arjun finally had to use. Oh well. Discussions are on at the moment over additional Arjuns for the Army. Stay tuned for updates.

  1. Shiv, you have been teasing us about the new orders for Arjun for a long time now. You need to at least give us some clues!!

  2. The Army must immediately place orders for about 600 Arjun MK1 to be produced in the next 3 years. Both Avadi and BHEL must produce Arjun with each building 100 per year. Then from the third year onwards when the Arjun MK-II comes a further order of 1000 Arjun's to be placed. This must ensure that around 1700 Arjun's be in the Army within the next 8 years. Also the Army must work with DRDO to build Arjun MK-III that will be futuristic tank. This must start production after the first lot of 1600 are produced within 8 years time.

  3. Why are you commentators not letting the Indian Army choose its numbers? The Russians have tested a prototype of the T-95 58 tonne tank. They could share with us the design of the engine that powers it.
The fact that Arjun gets inducted and indigenised is great for the Indian military.

  4. Yes, India should equip more Arjun Tanks with Night vision & more sophisticated technologies. India Should Procure 1000 of Arjun Tanks. As this is the best option of Home grown Development india need to look at. Rather buying T-90 from Russia India need to Place order for Arjun Tanks. Give job oppertunity to Indians too.

  5. I am totally agree with Ravi. Indians too should get a chance. Nobody can make a perfect system in the first time itself. DRDO solved many teething problems of Arjun in course of time. After the trial vs T-90s there should be no doubt about the capability of Arjun. But I surprise why Arjun turret does not have any slope as it enhance the self protection? Can anybody tell me the logic behind it.
