  1. Now, is that not a security violation ? As the GOI wanted to refrain from posting photographs of Arihant during the launch.

  2. Why does the surface look all wrinkly. Is it b'coz of the presence of anechoic tiles or that's how steel is cut. anyone?

  3. In reality India bacame the first country in Asia to manufacture a nuclear propelled submarine. Chinese claims in this area are just propaganda, though China is getting a lot of help from her buddy Israel.

    Capt. G.S. Arya

  4. GREAT!!!!!!!

Shiv this is not a 6000 ton, this is not less than 9000 ton and way bigger than Charlie class and somewhat closer to Akula size.

Great job Shiv. So the role is not going to be only a test bed 😉 and the reactor has to be bigger than 80.

  5. This is a coup of sorts !kudos to you shiv , we have waited for this day.Any news on ARIHANT'S progress in HAT'S and SAT'S ?

  6. Hey Shiv good to see our beast but did it approved by the govt? Isn't the pic any how harm our strategic forces while after so many days of official launch we couldn't see it!

  7. She is a bit rougher than an blue whale because she is not as large.

Only one torpedo tube, in the center, maybe not built as a hunter killer but for missile launches.

  8. as i said in one of the previous discussion it is inspired from charlie but itself a different class this it the start but i do agree the finish is not d best

  9. @Capt. G.S. Arya – Which nulcear submarines do Israelis have in their arsenal? And no Russian help whatsoever was sought in the production of the Arihant? The smell of jealousy overpowers the stench of curry.

@Shiv – In the age of digital cameras, we could used a better picture.

  10. GOOD JOB FINALLY YOU GOT YOUR HAND (LENSES) ON IT PLEASE AVOID POSTING ANY HD PICTURES OF THE SUB AND THE PEOPLE AROUND JUST A SUGESSION

  11. The unevenness on the hull of a seagoing vessel is caused by the steel plates 'fitting' around the internal stiffeners, nothing unusual about that.
    She is beautiful, beautiful.
    Thank you, Shiv.

  12. to the anon at 10:31 please get your facts straight, the amount of help received from the Russians in this project was clearly spelled out by the PM on the launch of this vessel. Also in an opinion the form factor of this submarine does not seem large enough to accommodate a large SLBM but this could be an SSGN rather than SSBM, which would make more sense in the short run that this submarine will be able to provide secondary strike capability through precision strike through cruise missiles.

    well!well!well!
    who do we hav here!!!
r u a porki, chinki or an asstralian???
    huh???

  14. grpcpt says "i do agree the finish is not d best"
wake up and smell the curry, its the anchovic rubber tiles to reduce noise propogation (and minimise sonar signature) that give it the unfinished look.

Anonymous at 12.59 : "maybe not built as a hunter killer but for missile launches."
serious need for spicy wakeup curry here also … from the very start of this whole ramayan they have been saying SSBN SSBN ….

  15. Hi Shiv,

Is it from UPA annual report?
I got the news that they have published the picture in their annual report.

But I really appreciate that you justify your blog name. "First + live"

  16. This is not any sub, it is a bad**s boomer. Notice the absence of a hump around the conning tower, making it more like the Ohio class. Can't rule Russian consultants using this as a test bed for their own new design. For the usual detractors, remember that the basic parts inventory for a submarine lists >22,000 line item categories. Commendable job by the naval architects

  17. Mr Shiv do you take pictures openly with your digicam or you use your 5megapixel cellphone stealthily?

  18. WHY ARE ALL OF YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW IT LOOKS,THE PICTURE HAS BEEN TAKEN IN DIM LIGHTING,AND IT IS NOT HOW THE FINAL PRODUCT WILL LOOK!ONLY HALF OF THE SUB IS SEEN IN THIS PHOTO!

  19. It looks somewhat like the LADA/Amur class of submarine with the high foreplanes and the extended dorsal section.
The Charlie class submarine and the Arihant have as much in common as a fish and a tadpole. Both swim!

  20. thats the beauty we all were waiting to see, it the beauty of human creativity…..100 billion are proud,…and im sure its an envy to the west and the east…soon more will follow,,,

  21. So, no security reason, INS Arihant was kept away from public just to be shown for first time in UPA report card?

In the hands of this kind of politicians India is certainly not safe.

  22. We need Capt Arya's in India to spin yarns and help our sense of low self esteem even if it means speaking untruths.
I am patriotic as the rest and best of them – but a nation that cannot go beyond manufacturing auto-rickshaw engines is able to create a nuclear submarine is stretching the truth beyond acceptable limits. Approximately one year has passed and we hear about no progress on the Arihant. They changed the time frame for testing from 1 year to 2 years and no one was the wiser/no questions asked.
Talking about nuclear subs – Nerpa was to have been handed to the Indian Navy by May, 2010. Any news on that fromt – Admiral Verma.
I have some ideas on your keeping your deadlines – Admiral Verma.
You dont know me — huh!

  23. Hey Guys,if this submarine resembles lada/amur or ohio or akula, does matter.I believe Indians can develop and integrate to create the world's best, take the example of su-30 MKI — it is far superior to su 30,27 and is in league of su 35.I have full faith on the honest brains and minds of this country that one day if not Arihant 1 or 2 but 3 will be most feared nuclear submarine on earth. We too will have such ATV's as capable as ohio, los angeles class

  24. anonymous@2:21
I don't you if you patriotic or not,but ignorant to the extreme you certainly are!!!!!
Auto-Rickshaws engines!!!! Where does that come from?????
Either you are a old foggie who has not grown up beyond the hamara bajaj days OR perhaps you are our not so friendly neighbors,Paki-chinis bhai bhai!!!!!

  25. Hey Guys,

I strongly believe that this photo was taken out of the launching ceremony that was held last year. You can see all the colourful decors and the name written on top just like our town roads gets white marks on either side before any politician's visit.

This is certainly one year old pic.

But…saying all this, it is an amazing feat. Building subs will push India into the A-League. No matter where the help came from it should be a proud moment for all brave souls worked over the years on it.

R&D is not possible without sufficient funding. We dont have deep pockets to support our indigenous programs. So govt should only take up few things at once. Not venturing into multiple and then delaying the set deadlines.

Any ways…I am as excited as any one on this blog..

Thank you Shiv for sharing the pic with us. (Atleast you are brave soul to step out than the Chhindits where only selective ppl were invited to check the photos). Hats off to you brother. Keep up your good work.

    Cheers

  26. Hey Shiv,

Thanks for posting this picture, I strongly believe that this baby is atleast 9000 tons, with 4 VL tubes to launch missiles. I guess the latest ones will be atleast 12,000 tonnes, close to the le tromphiant class, with 12 VL tubes to launch missiles, and is most likely to be 145*15*10 meters.

Also, we also consider SSGN's based on the Arihant. The SSBN's are mostly for deterrence and are hardly 'useable.' The SSGN's on the other hand, equipped with the Brahmos/Klub/Nirbhay in land attack/anti ship role could be more useful. Instead of a pure SSGN, an attach sub with limited land attack capability could also be considered. Just my 2 cents…

  27. anonymous@2:21
we can make Auto-Rickshaws engines!!!! as well as nuclear engines for submarines.Wait and watch you moron………………

  28. India was the first Country to hunt down a Submarine after WWII, that was a most advanced submarine of its time. Pns gazi [ex USS diablo], so the Hunt for Ships goes on.

  29. India was the First Country to Hunt down a Submarine Pns gazi[ex USS diablo] advanced Sub of its time. let the traditions pass to INS Arihant….

  30. Shiv you deserve a treat for this. am sure you will post the side view shortly. I am sure the scientists and designers must have got the best of both worlds in shaping it and in a years time when the reactor becomes critical the induction will amke the adversaries tremble with both fear and respect.

  31. What is this… this must keep confidential… as part i had work with her for last 2 years… don't show her photo………………

  32. What is the purpose of Publishing the Indian Top Secret Project Pics…. are you not trying to compromise our National Security by doing so?

  33. Nationalistic feelings apart, this Sub is piece of Crap. It wont be able to stand in a naval battle! Indian sarkari defence agencies cant even "assemble" or "maintain" SU30 planes properly. Worst safety record for airforce jets & helicopters. And a shameful safety record for submarines with the recent disasters as a stark reminder of their "capabilities".
    DISBAND THESE MONEY SUCKERS!!!
