Good news. But theres also bad news on the table.
Artillery gun purchase stalled again!! http://www.tribuneindia.com/2010/20100714/nation.htm#5
This is ridiculous. While these stupid politicians stall over trivial things, the armed forces are being denied crucial equipment. How can we possibly fight a 2 front war without any good equipment. They keep delaying everything so that by the time they arrive they will be outdated.
Something needs to be done about this. I wish we could hang all our politicians in public so that future politicos don't waste time and money.
Very good. It may be extra useful in all warlike situations including against the naxals.
Wow! what an achievement !
Yup, defence is not just the big ticket items, the "small things" matter too…probably generates more jobs…keeps the knowledge in the country…
oh man, this is awesome, but wont it change the tactics of warfare very much, how will it be used, will every soldier get one of these?
Fantastic News. I am sure the politicians are doing the right thing. Bribes not only tarnishes the names of the Ministers it also degrades the dignity of the nation. A modern and super power India must fight this menance like as though its another war. India must win this war against bribes and she will conquer and win many wars
Have any of you guys seem the link the anon posted (first one)??
[email protected] .. are you kidding me? Indian politicians are doing a good job? you sure gotta learn a lot.
One the one hand, they are giving away Kashmir to pakistan (http://epaper.dnaindia.com/epaperpdf/13072010/12main%20edition-pg12-0.pdf) "Successive statements by the Prime Minister in Havana, Sharm-al-Sheikh and Thimphu have all implied that, succumbing to American pressure, India is willing to cede Kashmir to Pakistan, the only issue being how to market such a climb-down to the Indian public."
And on the other, they are cancelling much needed artillery guns.
Kudos for the new INSAS, but lets not celebrate too early.
Artillery Gun purchase stalled:What a shame. It is the defence ministry babus who citing the rule that there should be more than one bidder for any defence purchase tender, have stalled the deal. There is only one bidder left, the rest have been eliminated or blacklisted by MOD.
If this happens once or twice, it can be bad luck or sheer stupidity because of the rules. But not purchasing guns for the last 20 years means that something is afoot, and that something stinks.
No number of force multipliers, tanks, MRCAs, N-Subs, AESA radars and AWACS can make up for not having quality artillery to pound the enemy soldier and military formations. The common soldier on the ground will pay a heavy price if the artillery can't take out the enemy's artillery and advancing formations.
The situation of the aritllery is so bad, that even an economically broke Pakistan has better ranged and more powerful artillery deployed on the borders in kashmir, whereas India is plagued by too few numbers of bofors 155mm guns there. All this means that the pakistanis and also the chinese in all sectors can comfortably place their guns out of reach of India's short ranged 105 and 130mm artillery, and relentlessly pound Indian miliraty bases and formations safely, and India has no way or retaliating or taking the fight to the enemy.
In kargil, India didn't have field artillery radars, while the pakistanis had the American AQ series. India paid a heavy price, because India's gun positions were attacked mercilessly. India had to pull out guns from all sectors to deploy them from mushkoh valley-drass-kargil-batalik to respond to the pakistanis, in the process the eastern LAC with china was left without any 155mm artillery.
This is the shameful reality of the Indian artillery saga. The truth is that leave aside China, which is on its way to becoming a military superpower, even a lowly pakistan can easily handle and win an artillery duel with India.
And India's MOD hasn't even started purchasing guns!
The congress I is develpoing cold feet because the company known as Bofors was the only contender left.
Coming back to the topic:
@Shiv,CAn you a post an article about the INSAS, its good and bad, . IS army planning to dumpINSAS?
THE excalibur version of INSAS , was it good or faulty? Why IA is agaiunst local made rifles?
It's now the time to issue scopes/reflex sights as a standard issue to every soldier instead of only the special forces.
What is national defense without a good artillery?
A GOOD SOLDIER WITH A GOOD GUN IS UNCONQUERABLE REMEMBER THIS ALWAYS NO MATTER HOW BETTER PLANES OR TANKS OR CANNONS YOU HAVE A SOLDIERS ONLY FRIND IS THE GUN
Its a shame arty deals got jammed once again should the country be in a situation of war what will happen?will politicians again slander the name of martyrs by saying dog will not pee on their doormat…what a crazy shitty country we are living and all of this is happening in complete indifference.Shiv have you reported this problem?
Man,by the time we get our arty guns, everybody else would be operating electro-magnetic rail guns or particle beam weapons.
What is it with arty????Unfortunately even the opposition is like that. They too will leave no chance of alleging bribes in even otherwise OK deals for political gain.
Well, BJP couldn't do anything either. It couldn't grant the tender to Bofor's after all the hungama they created during RG's period now, could they? All this, inspite of Bofor's winning the competition hands down. Why can't our Neta's put national interest above their own petty agendas for once. Just once. Get the goddamned 155 guns now. I think people should start collecting funds and giving it to the army directly. Send a check to BAE directly… it should hopefully shake the entire lot from their apathetic slumber
The artillery fiasco is a classic example of the fundamentally flawed defence procurement process in India.
The fact is unlike Russia, China, Pakistan and most Western countries, India's Armed Forces have practically no control over the weapon systems they buy. They can identify requirements, evaluate different systems and determine suitable suppliers, but they need the civilian MoD to actually award the contract and sign the dotted line. So any contract, even after being carefully evaluated and selected by the Armed Forces, has to go through multiple stages of bureaucracy including the Defence Ministers, Defence Acquisition Council, Cabinet Committe on Security etc.
As a result they are left to the mercy of civilian MoD babus and politicians, who do not care or understand about their needs, have no technical knowledge and are unqualified to make decisions on what to buy and how much, and are ultimately motivated only by monetary(price of system, bribes and commissions) and political(assuring jobs for DRDO/DPSU to secure votes from their many labour unions) considerations.
The only solution is to scrap the entire Ministry of Defence babudom and establish a new system where the development and purchase of defence system is put in the hands of the people who actually use them and risk their lives; similar to the Pentagon or the Russian Duma.
[Sarcasm]Why do we care about artillery? Let the jawans die, thats what they are paid to do. Our great "netas" have better things to purchase, such as upgrades to their houses, new cars, new jets, new copters.. who gives a damn about the bloody soldier? Hes a worthless peice of $hit![/Sarcasm]
Seriously though, I wish we could round them up and execute them all. Would be good target practice for the army and help clean our country.
If we go to war, we will lose badly to pakistan all because we dont have enough guns to hold our position
FOR GOD SAKE IM F****** TIRED OF ALL THIS BULLCRAP.. NOT A GOOD NEWS TO HEAR THESE DAYS..!!!
Shiv plzzzzzzzzzzz expose this @ media. pleaseeee!
Actually the BJP was in the middle of evaluating tenders for 1500 self-propelled howitzers and 3000 towed guns when it lost the election. Soon after AK Antony came with his obsession for 'transparency'(HAH!) and the tender got delayed and ultimately scrapped. This is the second time that idiot has scrapped it. I wonder what kind of thoughts run through his leftist mind. He obviously does not give a damn about the armed forces or their needs.
"they need the civilian MoD to actually award the contract and sign the dotted line.."
That is much better dude.. Please let the Generals have their simple dal roti or people will snatch that too.
I think they are already snatching their food too. There were scandals over fuel, and I'm sure if they dig deeper, someone somewhere would have made a quick buck over their food too. Just like Laloo had cheated through the fodder for cows.
These disgusting politicos will never miss an opportunity to make money even at the expense of another living being or the nation. Such is our great nation, and such is the public that elects them.
The present delays in purchases of defence deals despite the PM himself pushing for reforms to bring hasty changes to purchase programs points to a very sinister conspiracy of how India is being devalued by external forces.Esp since we are all aware of how strong lobbying works in india, whichever the government, it should not be overlooked as a fact the Indias Not becoming a superpower lays to rest the fears of the Islamic community, esp Saudi Arabia who look on themselves to be the elder brother for Pakistan in the regional politics. Its easier to BUY politicians who veto good programs than to send terrorists to blow up people in a country know for its corruption. An american study also points to the Fact that India is to become a Islamic republic by 2015.Go figure who all are working hard to make this happen.
