In Visakhapatnam

Will be on board INS Jalashwa (ex-USS Trenton), the Indian Navy's largest landing ship, in the Bay of Bengal over the next two days for a live amphibious assault demo. Photos and posts when I am back ashore.

  1. To Shiv: Do try to find out whether or not the exercises have nighttime modules. Also ask the CO of INS Jalashwa what's the status of the vessel's CIWS fitment and whether its on-board SH-3s are IFR-capable.

  2. Prasun:

India has signed restrictive clauses assuring Yankees that it would not position the erstwhile Trenton for offensive purposes and will allow periodic inspection of the ship.

    QUOTE:

The IN acquired six UH 3H helicopters under the Foreign Military Supply (FMS) programme, of a foreign Government, in November 2006, along with training and support facilities at an approximate cost of Rs 182.14 crore. These helicopters were acquired for utility purpose to be used on board the Landing Platform Dock (LPD), INS Jalashwa, also acquired from the foreign Navy. The helicopters were received in September 2007, embarked on INS Jalashwa’s maiden trip to India. Audit examination revealed that the helicopters procured were life expired and had many defects which would ultimately compromise operational effectiveness

  3. Its a landing ship but who is it landing since we don't have marines. Please elaborate on the customers of INS Jalashwa if you can get any hard facts. We probably know more about the MARCOS than the 314th Ind Bde.

Its prime role is to land n support ground forces during war time, as well as rescue operations.

  5. @keshto.With all due respect I am aware of the role and function an LPD plays. My query pertains to the identity and details of the unit/s earmarked for the amphibious role within the Indian military OrBat.
The MARCOS are the scalpels; who is the hammer?
In other words who are these ground forces that Jalashwa is to land and support.
All I have heard is the 314th Independent Brigade.

Any elaboration would be much appreciated. (wink wink nudge nudge Shiv:))

  6. Guys Its great to see that we are in the fast process of development. First our scientists were learning but now they are executing hence failures are going to happen but it is important that they try. Now when they are delivering well I think they will do it quicker.
