VIDEO: Today’s Successful Agni-IV Test

DRDO Statement: India today successfully test fired its most advanced long range missile system, the Agni-IV. The missile was launched from a road mobile launcher at 9AM from Wheelers’ Island off the coast of Odisha. The missile followed its trajectory, attained a height of about 900-km (??) and reached the pre-designated target in international waters of the Bay of Bengal. All mission objectives were fully met. All systems functioned perfectly till the end encountering re-entry temperatures of more than 3000⁰C.

This missile is one of its kind, proving many new technologies for the first time, and represents a quantum leap in terms of missile technology. The missile is lighter in weight and has two stages of solid propulsion and a payload with re-entry heat shield. The composite rocket motor which has been used for the first time performed flawlessly. The missile system is equipped with modern and compact avionics with redundancy to provide a high level of reliability. The indigenous Ring Laser Gyros based high accuracy INS (RINS) and micro-navigation system (MINGS) complementing each other in redundant mode have been successfully flown in guidance mode for the first time. The high performance onboard computer with distributed avionics architecture, high speed reliable communication bus and a full Digital Control System controlled and guided the Agni-IV to the target. The missile has reached the target with very high level of accuracy. Radars and electro-optical systems along the coast of Odisha tracked and monitored all parameters of the missile test. Two Indian Naval ships located near the target witnessed and recorded the final event.

Defence Minister A.K. Antony congratulated the DRDO team on its achievement. Avinash Chander, Distinguished Scientist & Chief Controller (Missiles & Strategic Systems) at DRDO and Programme Director, AGNI addressed his team after the launch, and called today’s test the beginning of “a new era in modern Long Range Navigation Systems”. He said, “this test has paved the way ahead for the success of AGNI-5 Mission, which will be launched shortly.”

Agni-IV Project Director Ms Tessy Thomas and her team prepared and integrated the missile system and launched the Agni-IV successfully today. An ecstatic Ms Thomas said today that the DRDO had produced and proven many new state of the art technologies with the Agni-IV like composite rocket motors, very high accuracy Ring Laser Gyro based Inertial Navigation System, Micro Navigation System, Digital Controller System and very powerful onboard computer system. The Agni-IV can deliver strategic warheads, and will be produced in large numbers for delivery to India’s nuclear command.

  1. Shiv the HT tag looks dirty. Make it small and on one side of the video please. Otherwise we may all make some other video of the launch as the most watched. Is this a threat? Yeah. lol. But Dont' make the video look bad with that HT tag.

  2. Just simply unable to understand how you are so fast with your posts when you have a full time job also. you always are first off the mark with videos and photos and articles on breaking news. how do you juggle everything sir? with great admiration and respect, jaggi.

  3. Simple question: Shouldn't the ballistic missile release less smoke trail so that they are less visible to the enemy?
Is the actual user trial missile going to be different than the one used in this test?

  4. @anon 1:13,

The launch and stages will burn up thousands of Km away from the enemy,so 'smoke' does not matter.Wht matter though is the'signature',that is heat, spectrum etc given of by the missile that can be tracked by certain kinds of spy -satellites.Our people must be keeping such things in mind.

  5. Fantastic this is really a modern day missile with complete solid stage structure, so preparation time for missile lunch in hostile situation is very low compared to liquid stages

This means we r ready to lunch always with in less than 10min.
With the mentioned state of the art navigation this missile has high precision

I luv to see our step in missile tech is modern and directed in correct path for more formidable future

"ENEMIES SHOULD THINK TWICE FROM NOW WITH THEIR FUTURE STEPS"

JOB WELL DONE!………….. SALUTE TO OUR DRDO!

  6. This is a really positive step for India. As India continues to march ahead with the development of missiles, we as citizens can have a sigh of relief that we are well protected with advanced technologies. Having said that, India's power projection will never be complete until we develop ICBMs.

  7. "The Agni-IV can deliver strategic warheads, and will be produced in large numbers for delivery to India's nuclear command."_ ANY GUESSES HOW MANY??????

  8. I too had the same doubt shiv!!! can it go to an altitude of 900km? it can as well launch a remote sensing satellite weighing 1 ton then..some goof up>>>

  9. Thanks shiv for the clarification on hiding the HT tag.
Fins? It's tucked inside. you'll not see it. It's invisible. lol. Anyway it seems they are going to canister Agni-IV and then there will be this Agni-V. May be Agni-IV and Agni-V will be India's missiles for nuclear deterrence and massive retaliation. Agni-II's are short legged and cannot cover China. So they will be withdrawn and replaced in equal numbers with Agni-IV.

  10. i felt it too how such classed missile climb up such a elevation there is some error mr.shiv will u plz clarify this thanks and one more thing i wanted to know the current status of insas msmc

  11. Heard a few days ago about AGNI 2Prime launch, dunno why they suddenly changed the name..anyway the name change seems to be lucky for DRDO..

A huge congrats to the people behind this project….also waiting for AGNI-5

  12. Canistered, solid fueled, accurate & big range means protected, longer lasting, low maintence, quickly launched, credible. Hope it has counter measures. Great stuff DRDO Definatly sounds like a quantum jump over the previous versions, looking forward to number 5 and eventually a 7000km + version. wow 900ks high that sounds awsome probably overstated though. 10/4

  13. When is the Pressurised Water Reactor, which uses enriched uranium as fuel, on board India's nuclear-powered submarine, Arihant, going critical?

I was actually hoping that it would be started up by the end of this year, but I am told now that it will be commissioned in January or February 2012. Some things are yet to be settled.

    Any info regarding Arihant submarine

  14. one clarification reqd. why does not the missile developed in India are shorter , so that they can be used for all the platforms…18-20 m length is too much to make them available for all platforms….

  15. hey shiv…. cud u please tell us whats the significance of having an agni-3 with the same range as well as and agni-4 with the same range??? and how does both the missiles compare both in terms of capability and deployment…??? hoping for an answer…. 🙂

  16. 900kms altitude??. Why such a steep trajectory for a 3000km range missile? To me it appears that the actual full range of the missile must be much larger than 3000km.

  17. One must not be carried away with the test we still are far away from the 6000+ submarine launched variants as we are a no first use country that should be our goal. Anyways we can order the champgane but do not pop it yet.
