PHOTOS: Indian Army Rocket Artillery Systems At Sudarshan Shakti

The indigenously-developed Pinaka and Russian 9K58 SMERCH multibarrel rocket launcher systems from Indian Army rocket regiments were part of theater offensive maneouvers at Exercise Sudarshan Shakti in the Thar Desert over the last few weeks. The Indian Army, I am happy to report, is dead pleased with the Pinaka: with three regiments operational and two more in the pipeline, things are looking good. UPDATE: The Pinaka, incidentally, was put through some demo firings in Orissa earlier this week.

  1. Dear Shiv,
Our Pinaka's are looking great in their operational deployment.First one I am seeing with blast -protectors on crew cab of the TATRA.Any info/feedback on what the crews feel about it as a system.

Some niggling issues were being reported on the SMERCHs.Have they been resolved?

  2. As the CO & chief testing Officer (could not help saying that )of the rocket regiment which tested the Pinaka during the final user trials at Pokaran in 200r it is good to know that the Pinaka has been well received.
We had tested a Fire Direction radar also during the trails which failed when the DG Arty was checking out the system. One sore point was the software which was primitive at that time.Hope it has improved since then

By ommission you have said what the press has been saying. SMERCH is having problems?

    What say Russian ambassedor !

  4. Now that is a welcome news by the armed forces for indigenous defense product. Will love to see our armed forces show more trust in home built systems and going more for indigenous product rather than foreign acquired.

That last picture I can see 7 MBRL systems with 12 rockets each. 12 x 7 = 84 rocket barrage in less than 15 seconds. Now that is serious firepower.

  5. Looking glitzy and glamarous, ready to go full blast. On a relaistic note, came to know that Pak (*&^&^ s are developing low yield Nuclear artillery shells and rockets aimed to stop any offensive army through nuclear threat.

Steps need to be taken to handle this new threat.

  6. Shiv great work as usual man.. Can we expect any coverage of the exercise in your Headlines Today channel? Also please do some exposays on Arjun and Tejas program on what is delaying them so much, i cant stand that shitty bird called Tejas. No engine, no radar and not even inducted after 30yrs, even Singapore would have done a better job if it took 30yrs. No more excuses on how we are "learning" we no longer hide behind words like learning. We dont even do better tanks or guns than Israel and South Korea.

P.S. The B.R types are still in denial mode on our indigenous failures.

  7. OfRoad

I hate INSAS so much I want to clean The INSAS Designer ASS with INSAS

What classic case of poor designing ,Sometime i just confuse They have any Idea about Style, Usability

How can a soldier use a 4 feet bulky rifle in CQB

  8. After viewing the two together, one can't help but notice how beefy the Pinaka's elevating and swivelling mechanism is, as compared to that of the Smerch (or even the BM-21)

Probably the result of a conservative design — because of their inexperience, it is not hard to imagine that the design team erred on the side of caution

  9. awesome snaps sir 🙂 smerch is really looking deadly in last pic. this the how the indian army shown his power. pinaka MBRL also evolved very much.

    carry on gud work

  10. i dnt know frm whose side the delay is…sometimes i get the impression that the armed forces are biased toward homegrown equipment and weapons system.just look at the speed in which c130,additional p8i and other western weapons are ordered while tejas and arjun are still being ''tested''.No matter what our engineers and scientist have fought against odds(tech denial regimes specifically designed for India)and gave us these fantastic weapons..cant they just induct them and make changes as they go along??

  11. In all the excellent pictures of this exercise, one thing is being sorely missed, modern, esp self-propelled 155mm artillery.
And the saddest part is the omission is not due to any budgetary problems, but that of bureaucratic and political indecision.

  12. Shiv:
Its irritating to see your LIVEFIST watermark on the pictures. If someone plagiarises your pictures, they can always be exposed (like you did).

If you are generous, you will receive more opportunities, though its your right to be a scrooge.

  13. @Anon 1:50,
Explosives are dangerous and hazardous by their very nature. No weapon is to be loaded or chambered or primed unless the intention is there to operate the weapon either in a proper range or in actual action.
There was once a serious accident in BDL when a live loaded AT missile was being exhibited and it was accidentally fired resulting in fatalities.
The slightest lapse or carelessness can lead to very dangerous consequences.
Unless one see them in action one just cannot estimate how powerful these weapons are and at what astonishing circumstances, distances firearms can be lethal.

  14. If you don't mind keep on wriing more on the grounds that its unexpected that somebody has something intriguing to say in regards to this. Will be holding up for additional! To get new data visit here
