Cmde.Maolankar – such a senior officer – piloted the first sortie of the Naval LCA? While I have the highest regard for our armed forces and the people who serve, such senior experienced officers are beyond measure. Cmde.Maolankar carries with him 100 manyears of naval aviation knowhow. How could the IN risk him with its 1st test flight? I know that it is v.difficult to maintain peak flying rating in our forces. So senior officers never want to hang up their flight suit. But there should be a rule against allowing such senior people on risky missions like this.

Commodore maolankar has been with the programme since 2004. He is currently the most experienced LCA test pilot and the only one with carrier deck experience (he flew sea harriers off Vikrant). Experience is far more important than youth in a test programme. The T-50 PAK FA is flown by a 62 year old Russian, the F -35 by a 55 yr old test pilot amongst other younger pilots. Normally in India we dont allow prototype flying after 50, he is only 47!!
