HAL Reveals Model Of Indian FGFA

PHOTO / HAL
In the latest from the Indo-Russian fifth generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) programme, HAL has revealed this 1:15.5 scale model of a modified single-seater, based on the Sukhoi T-50 PAK FA that’s currently in flight test. HAL’s Aircraft Research & Development Centre (ARDC) has created the flow-through model with 80 components “including  the  dedicated pieces for simulating the deflections of the 12 flight control surfaces of the aircraft”, according to recent HAL literature.

The platform is designated ‘Perspective Multirole Fighter (PMF)’ in India. After the 2010 contract for design of the modified joint aircraft, the government had said, “PMF draws upon the basic structural and system design of the Russian FGFA Technology Demonstrator with modifications to meet IAF specifications which are much more stringent. The broad scope of bilateral cooperation during the joint project covers the design & development of the PMF, its productionization and joint marketing to the third countries. Programme options include the design & development of a twin seater variant and the integration of an advanced engine with higher thrust at a later stage.”

More information on the PMF/FGFA cooperation in this Sukhoi release from 2011.

  1. After reading the article it feels like the IAF version will be stealthier as they clearly talk of 'more stringent requirements'. Anyway glad to see progress in this project as this is going to be instrumental for IAF air superiority in coming years.

  2. They are holding it as if they have caught a precious bird after great struggles.

Anyhow it is good to note that India have further stringent requirements. Earlier it was being thought that FGFA will only be a twin seater.

  3. again seems to be round exhaust nozzle rather than the F 22 style nozzle…..how is it going to impact the stealth compared to F 22

  4. The Chinese are showing their fully assembled fifth generation bird J-21 and we are showing scaled models of FGFA….

    Mera Bharat Mahan….

  5. India and Japan has a common problem ie. China.
It is time to develop a Indo-japanese Multirole fighter aircraft. We must review if Japan can resolve the problems of the Kaveri Engine.

  6. My goodness first try to make sure LCA is cleared. The HAL is a bunch of lazy old guys sitting and eating up tax payers money. I am pretty sure sure I am not going to see one finished usable product from this good for nothing organisation

  8. Totall understandable and good policy shiv. sites like idrw, bhrat rakshak and india defence, army fans etc regularly steal your contents and use them as their own.

  9. The so called scientists and technicians of HAL is making a mockery of what ever is left of India's reputation. We are having an event to show the model of a 5th generation fighter, that too before developing the technology. Even for a 4th generation jet like the LCA, we are still importing engines of US and showcasing it as indegenous Jet. Ridiculous! Pakis and Cheenis will be laughing!

    Hi Shiv,

Why are the Yankees playing truant regarding the sale of the JAVELIN missile? They say they will not sell India critical technologies related to the Javelin . This is hat I hate about the Yankees …. they are the champions of hypocricy .

    Regards,
    Abhijit

  11. Most of the reader's here are plain ignorant.

Japan and India working together on an aircraft lol. This is never going to happen.

We are better off solving our own problems, it's not like we haven't got the brains. We simply lack proper organising capabilities and leadership in the right areas.

  12. @5:32
What is stealing here ? he is blogging about Indian defense. So there is nothing like stealing here. I hope Shiv's intention is to spread the words, not take the credit.

And all those who blame DRDO and other institution – If you really want to change this, simple join DRDO are ask your kids to be part of it.

  13. Yes, cant wait for this fighter to be inducted in 2050 or 2075. By that time, there will be 8th gen fighters 🙂

  14. Rahul Samanta sir,

dont just compare the outputs of the Indian and Chinese programs, also compare the inputs:

    -Money & human resources dedicated
    -Industrial base
    -Scientific base
    -User support

  15. A very unfortunate state of affairs.

Despite an indigenous AMCA under development, why on earth must India import Russian PAK-FA ?

Mr. Aroor, I may request you to write an in-depth article on why the so-called FGFA is just a rehash of the import-license model.

    1. Hope this aircraft turns better than Sukhoi…no doubt Russians are best in designing, they are also best in making money from India like gorshkov….

  16. Ok, it would be good to hear something about the Helo deals now!
Why is the Indian media always late to the party when it comes to announcing stuff. The Aviation week reported yesterday that the Apache Ah-64D is now entered contract negotiations phase after the financial bids were opened last week. I have not seen anyone in the Indian defence media establishment talking about this yet ? Why so ?

  17. "The fighter is being developed on the basis of the Russian perspective aviation complex (PAK FA) according to stringent technical requirements of the Indian side." – Sukhoi

"PMF draws upon the basic structural and system design of the Russian FGFA Technology Demonstrator with modifications to meet IAF specifications which are much more stringent." – India

One of these things is not like the other one. The idea of some Indian nationalists that their FGFA will be a better PAK-FA is unsupported!

  18. "Reveals Design"….lol…..Funskool makes better models than that….what a joke!!!! We Indians cannot even make a basic fighter aircraft…and all are jumping up and down over a plastic model!

  19. HAL Always prefers shortcut approach. It should come with its own product. Slight modification work not good for reputed organization. Howmuch original content exist in FGFA. Tell the truth.

  20. From what can be seen this aircraft is based on the Su 30 concepts which is not a bad thing and has much to recommend it for India.
Wonder if it was deliberate that HAL has not shown a clear picture.

It reminds me of the 'Fifties when the Soviet Union would release blurred pictures of its aircraft so that Analysts would not be able to assess the aircraft. Since each and every aircraft picture released was gently blurred to obscure the details- flaps, inlets, blow down doors etc- the Western analysts joked "The Soviets must be building them BLURRED".
