Indian Army Announces Mounted Gun Competition

PHOTO / INDIA TODAY
In the latest of the Army’s long and tragicomic endeavour to give its artillery regiments new guns — the first in 25 years since the Bofors scandal — it has now officially announced interest [PDF] in a new 155mm/52cal mounted gun system, a gun mounted on a wheeled vehicle. The Army is known to need at least 814 of this type of gun, a requirement that has twisted and turned between struggling life and sudden death for more than a decade. As expected, the Army has also made it clear that the systems contending for the contract need to fielded by Indian vendors. Among a host of systems likely to be fielded by companies like L&T, Bharat Forge and Mahindra Land Systems, the Tata SED mounted gun system (first revealed by colleague Sandeep Unnithan last year) will also participate. More details soon.

  1. Tragedy of the army or for the country we have such irresponsible government who have ruled nearly for 60 years. One day these very people would be caught unawares just like uttrakhand tragedy. What for them its only the civilians who have to suffer. These politicians would be counting the dead bodies.

    1. Very true and it does not matter to those scamps whether our soldiers die or live!it is high time Indian private companies started supplying our armed forces as even the DRDO has failed.

  2. Another day another artillery RFP by the MoD. It is a wonder anybody responds to this farce any longer.

The Congress government's shenanigans with artillery contracts have doomed the nation and the Indian Army to be forever outgunned by our adversaries.

  3. The best system in this category is the Nexter Caesar (French). 155mm/ 52 Cal, 40km>range, 6 round/mn, deadly accurate and light enough to be airlifted by C-130 Hercules.

Combat proven with French Army un Afghanistan ans Mali.

  4. After getting caught in kickback scams in these mega defense deals, the Con-I govt has roped in the uber corrupt Pvt Cos to merely act as middlemen. None of these guns are "Indian" so to speak. These are foreign guns branded as Indian. This cozy arrangement helps the corrupt Pvt Cos and babus to drain the country further dry. The Con-I govt has been looting this country right since it's independence with few business families. Is it any wonder that almost 90% of the nation's wealth is in the hands of few political and business families??

  5. First sign off all the pending contracts Rafale deal, AH64D longbow, Ch47-chinook, Utility helicopter, INSAS 2020 (new armor for our infantry), what happened to Arjun MK2? Now please don't reject Indian made projects, even if its 30% inferior to the imported ones.

  6. @Unknown

Do we have any choice? Con-I was created by the British to perpetuate their rule over Indian subcontinent.

You need lots of resources to float a pan India political party. And this can only happen with the blessings of those who actually run this country.

  7. In 1997 DRDO halted the Army's requirement of Gun locating radar… DRDO claimed that they were on the verge of success in the field.
Thus the IA was thrust into a war without the equipment in the kargil war. A complete study should be carried out of the casualties suffered due to the non availability of the equipment. The study should also be undertaken highlighting the advantages and thus the benefits in the said war if the IA was not DENIED due to SHEER NEGLIGENCE AND DECEIT the Gun locating radar.

Then a suit of deceit amounting to security hazard to the nation, aiding murder due to negligence of duty and another a suit on lying to the nation on security issues should be filed on DRDO and the advisory that advised the Govt of India not to comply with army requirements and hampering with national security should be named and tried.
If armed forces personnel can be tried for treason, if politicians can be hounded by the media on corruption, how come the IAS and MoD guys go scot free after the greatest treason.

In 2013 the IA is devoid of the requirements put up in 1997. How can we make sure that DRDO does not halt another such projects , after all the trainer was denied to the air force, and the rafaelle which would have been flying under the tri color is still lingering on, on paper trails….due to HAL….

    Rajpurohit Future warfare system-
Artillery is weapons of past century after upgarading with self propelled and guide projectile modern forces r using but as per future requirement, we have to retire all type of artillery gun We have to induct guided MBRL with multiple warhead or with cluster bomb or CBU SMART MUNITION with counter measure. Throw these high tech weapons we can achieve pin point accurecy, army will more hazardious to enemy with CBU OR MGW With counter measure these multiple guided warhead will hard to intercept by Iron dome like missiles so do not waiste money of poor Indian, induct high tech weapons which will require less crew, easy to handle and a game changer Technology.

  10. Let all Indian participatants come to gather and produce a gun, e.g. EAD Typhoon aircraft produced by Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy. Indian vendors can collaborate an produce a gun, form joint R&D, produce indegenously and manufacture extra neccessary spare parts. This method of management will help us to keep in line with advancement in this category with the rest of the world and we can use a gun that suits our needs and conditions and environment. The government must make sure that all joint vendors are jointly responsible to government as a single joint company, answerable to government as a single joint company and all time schedules are followed firmly and heavy penalties be paid for any delays. If Indian companies do not agree to such terms and conditions, then welcome the best foreign participatants.
The defence system must not be stretched any more for time limits. When we need a gun for any particular reason that could be the best answer for an action, then that weapon must be in our hands and in time of need. At such time, either money, swadeshi, foreign or mix of swadeshi and foreign is not counted. Swadeshi is only counted when a suitable weapon could be ready for use against a probable threat in calculated anticipated time.
In short, we must have a limited best available guns ready at any time and wait for Swadeshi gun to be ready in suitable time bu without compromising time schedules.
It may happen that swadeshi companies may buy foreign technology at cheaper rate when they are about to become outdated and produce to the Indian government as if it was new and indegenous. This can happen when they are playing upon TIME. All participants of any deal, the government, the army, swadeshi participants must follow tight time schedules. Any participatant missing time schedule after a first or second chane must pay penalty and ask to quit the system and be replaced by more responsible participatant.
