These beauties just landed: formation flights of French Air Force Rafales with an IAF MiG-27 and Su-30 MKI over Rajasthan for #Garuda5. More soon.

Of course it's a professional exercise, but can't help looking at it like an epic Rafale promo directed towards the IAF. Excellent move Dassault! Don Draper would be proud.

  2. Wow! Looks like men in machines are out to impress the princesses in Jodhpur Palace. Sure the best seats to view the exercise are there. 🙂

  4. How does Rafale compare with saab's Gripen ng. It only has an operating cost of 3700$ whereas rafale has an operating cost of 14000$. Rafale is the best 4.5 gen aircraft available now. Unlike the eurofighter typhoon everything is ready in rafale with the new f3r standard.
But instead of buying 1 Rafale, we could buy 2 Gripen. Gripen has only half the unit cost of Rafale. Instead of maintaining 1 Rafale, we could maintain 4 Gripen. So we could buy and maintain 300 Gripens for lesser cost than 126 Rafales. Life cycle cost is also very low for Gripen. Is Gripen ng a better buy? anyone reply.

    1. Gripen NG is still a distant programmatic dream. Rafale is fighting wars, it's designed for countries with genuine security issues like india. If you count heads Gripen is cheaper to buy and fly. By measure of military effects, Rafale has unbeatable value for money (more effects with less planes, so altogether cheaper). Look at Mali last year: 4 Rafale took off from North France, flew uninterrupted alnost 10 hours to the middle of Africa, destroyed more than 20 targets in terrorist camps. Who else does those things?

  5. Dear Shiv,
Its long you have spilled the beans on behind the scenes negotiations or noises on our def modernisation. I see you speak more on political stores on news nowadays… What about Defence news?

Actually, you can initiate a compiling list on priority acquisitions for new Govt, crowd sourced list.

  6. I would file a law suit against Satish for harrassing your bloggers and file an FIR with the police indicating his terroristic motives.

    Hi Shiv Aroor,

You are invited and welcome at my home for dinner too when you are in USA next time.
However, Red Flags Exercise goes on at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada and it is very far away. They cancelled the latest ones due to budget cuts.

Enjoy your blog and pictures and keep up good work and also do not forget to ask tough, important, and intelligent questions to help readers.

    Thanks.
