EXCLUSIVE: Another Peep Into India’s Secret Stealth UCAV Project

Pity we don’t have a closer look at what’s on that screen, but that slide confirms India’s secretive UCAV programme is progressing through its feasibility study phase. The photograph here is from March 21, where Dr. Biju Uthup, director of the programme (IUSAV or Indian Unmanned Strike Air Vehicle) is seen making a presentation at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kanpur as part of the institute’s series of talks where academic researchers get a chance to figure how they can contribute to national military or industrial projects.
That picture adds a layer of tantalising (but altered) detail to the images we have of the concept studies on the classified programme so far. The picture appears to be a cutaway, though a more detailed, and shape-altered one compared to these I posted two years ago that first showed how the IUSAV team at the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) was envisioning the craft.
IIT-Kanpur, incidentally, has already begun working on technologies for the IUSAV. More concept images of the IUSAV through the last four years are here, here and here. Last year, DRDO chief Dr Avinash Chander spoke out formally for the first time on the IUSAV in an interview to me.

  1. This seems a good start and DRDO`s Idea to collaborate with IIT is also nice step for future. I hope they should also leverage the design expertise available within the country with institutes like NID,IDC etc. As a design student I had always dreamt of contributing to nation`s defense.

  2. what is wrong with you publish this picture and report in detail about the project?
Let the Chinaman and the Pakman at least put some effort in gathering this information

  3. Dear Author,

It is great that you bring us latest news and updates on defence sector in India….

but don't you think that leaking such information of secret tech and developments is exposing our own self to enemies??

What do you think? Making a sensational news for you is bread and butter…. but are you going to do that at the cost of India's security??

  4. India can develop this UCAV within 5 to 7 years but DRDO can develop this UCAV within 30 to 40 years. India must find alternative of DRDO, ADA and HAL

  5. If we shut down DRDO, where else do you think the 50% substandard student material, that passed out from our premier instutitions, funded by our hard earned tax money would be gainfully employed. In the DRDOs at least we keep their minds and mouth shut, least they come up with some new political parties and create choas. By the way, the photo published of sensitive underdevelopment projects should not be public domian. Shiv you erred. Accept it
