IAF gets first Rohini 3D-Surveillance Radar

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), today handed over the first of the 3-dimensional radar ‘Rohini’ to the Indian Air Force. The state-of-the-art Multifunction Medium Range Surveillance Radar has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), Bangalore and engineered and produced by BEL.

It is capable of handling multiple targets simultaneously and also precisely calculate the height at which projectiles are flying. Mounted on Tatra mobile platform, a heavy duty modified truck built by the public sector Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and supported by an auxiliary mobile power unit, it enables the Rohini to be easily transported to the battlefront.

Operating in a range of upto 170 kilometres and an altitude of 15 kilometres, the Rohini radar can track multiple targets like fighter jets and missiles travelling at supersonic speeds of over 3,000 kms per hour, viz around Mach 3. The radar employs an array of Electronic Counter Counter Measure (ECCM) features including frequency agility and jammer analysis. A Secondary Surveillance Radar, IFF, is integrated with the primary radar Rohini, which distinguishes friendly and hostile aircraft. About 100 pieces are expected to be built, with around 20 radars being manufactured every year.

The army has conducted successful trials of a Rohini variant for detecting and tracking missiles. Another variant, ‘Revathi’, is being developed for the Navy.

  1. Should be standalone. Per IAF, Akash’s detection of low flying targets was not satisfactory.

May be they can integrate this radar into the Akash system to improve it…

  2. Can’t IAF go in for larger fixed 3D radar in all their bases? This one is a small but powerful mobile version, very good for field deployments.
But it is time the IAF took a generational leap and deployed 21st century tech across the board.

  3. What a show off you are Mr. Shiv Aroorji….everywhere you want attention, hence putting up your photos….its like screaming from rooftops about your pursuits and getting people to comment forcibly.

on Livefist and facebook, everywhere you’ve splashed your photos and the story actually gets killed…the weight of the story is nothing…even on TV last year when you showed your half hour special of the Arjun, you just focussed on yourself driving the tank, and nothing else.

Where has your talent gone, when people knew your name and your work through the name? Now its only about you, you and you…..all the time attention seeking….everywhere splashing photos to impress girls to get comments from them that you look like Tom Cruise etc…is this your aim, is this your journalism…where are the big stories?

  4. Well I dont use facebook, orkut etc and can’t care less about the personal life of Shiv. It is none of my business.

But I agree with the last anon. Shiv, please check your own writeups a year or two back, you will notice the difference. We appreciate the photos and the press releases, but they dont make this site unique..

  5. yes please come up with some good reports and not just releases….you can do what you want in facebook, orkut etc. You dont seem to be working hard enough, Shiv? Busy with other things.

  6. i think the fact that people have become so demanding of shiv’s blog is proof of how popular it is and the excellence that people expect. as far as i know this is not his full time work. he is a tv journalist and he does his best to keep this blog updated. so those of us who choose to visit this site, we should not complain too much. though this s a democracy and i certainly would be happy if press release numbers went down. how about some columns and opinion pieces shiv?

  7. to the cry baby anons above:

shiv is not forcing you to read his blog or to look at this pictures. quick fucking trolling and post comments relevant to the story or gtfo. i am tired of seeing this shit in every post.

keep up the good work shiv

  8. the mail today correspondent?? strange behaviour from a journo. i thought they were a private lot. well all said and done, miss sharma if you are reading this, in case you have a bone to pick with shiv aroor (which you clearly do), i request you to take it up with him, and not disrespect the rest of us here on this blog with your comments which none of us has anything to do with, or are interested in by any stretch of imagination. go to bharat-rakshak. there are folks like you there who you can find camraderie with! 🙂

  9. Above anon , you are even worse than us, that you have all the time to read, think and analyse our comments and then give your opinion on the entire matter which you otherwise vulgar, useless and unwarranted in a sacred place like this.

So what does all this speak about you and make you. All you do is hour after hour , minute after minute you keep coming here, reading these comments, which shows that you have absolutely nothing to do, and need to get a life , and that you are a seriuos journalist much like the owner of this blog, who apart from being a journo is also a dog.

Atleast we have some relation, grudges with the owner of this blog, its free for all, so we and anyone can write anything, just anything.

This blog is less seriuos than a dating site, which is why you chaps come here for spice and never miss these comments, then why the ho-hulla?

As it is no one comes here just for press releases, but also for entertainment, so stay tuned, there’s more to come. Infact this blog is gonna be taken over by google-chat very soon.

So why complain? yahan to yahi honewala hai. courtesy google-chat.

If you want seriuos stuff, log on to adult matchmaker…..this is pressrelease.com

Happy chatting and see you later…doggy.

  10. all you jerks in you late 20s, 30s, 40s have insecurities, phobias including committment phobia, and you guys try to pretend like young college teenagers as if you have all the time, but actually you are shallow, hollow, lonely , depressed .

  11. Why all this personal comments and hatred?

It is a fact that this blog is not as good as it used to be. Then why do you guys still visit it? to post personal comments and obscene remarks? what use?

We never saw any response from Shiv for any of these comments. So what does that say? Either he accepts them and wont do a thing about it, or he feels they are so lowly that they doesnt deserve a response.

Either way nothing constructive is coming out of your personal bashings. Stick to the criticizing the content – not the author or his affairs.

I too dont like the quality of writeups on this blog – that doesnt mean I will break into his house at midnight with a gun and say “Feeze… I always knew you were doing that…… sleeping at the night instead of writing blogs”
