Admiral of the Fleet

Why has India never had one?

  1. Rather than asking that question, you should ask why should India have a fleet admiral at all? What is the need and justification other than every old navy has one?

  2. Only one came close to it,who happened to be at the helm when the Navy won the war at sea in 1971,but later he turned an arms agent. He also wrote a self-aggrandizing book ‘The Man Who Bombed Karachi’,conveniently glossing over his role in the loss of INS Khukri.’Admiral of the Fleet’ is a rare honour, reserved for exceptional higher leadership in times of war and peace. That occasion is yet to arrive in free India. In the past, perhaps Kanhoji Angre or the Zamorin of Calicut would have fitted the bill.

  3. Because Shiv….there is no Admiral ‘living’ worthy of that title. S.M. Nanda came close in 1971…but we all know how that turned out…with his family that is.

  4. madam pratibha patil, our esteemed president is the supreme
commander of indian armed forces which also includes a small tug in IN.

  5. IAF is facing high depletion in fighter sqn's ( status – dangerous)
No longer range SAM's to defens air bases (similar to s-300 / s-400)

Indian navy has very low volume of submarines in fleet ( status – dangerous )

Army has no large nos surface to surface missiles in inventory , maintaining v low volume of missiles than pakistan. Agni 1 & agni 2 are not massively included in army – still in trail stage , even though we have any moment problems with pak/china . india still maintains very cool & un preparedness .( status – dangerous)

No proper / good volume of longer range anti-tank missiles / MBT's / Longer range SAM's

India never maintained proper & perfect defense force , so no one is interested in govt to have Admiral of the fleet .

  6. beacuse ,it’s the naval chiefs that fight for the right and other services just follow……………………..I AM AN ARMY OFFICER AND I FEEL NAVY IS IN A MUCH BETTER STATE OF AFFAIRS THAN OTHER SERVICES…………….This is the damn state the army has come to……………….following a service that’s 1/20th of your size………………..shame on us

  7. B’cos India has a small navy thats why, you fool! There are no Admirals in small navies.

Shiv, you do some basic defence correspondent’s course or something and then come. You seem to know nothing.

idiot, small navy ? no admiral ?

WTF are you talking about ? do you understand the difference between a 4-star admiral and a 5-star one ?

  9. IN should have an Admiral of the Fleet . Its an honour and requires no justification . There are a number of veterans from the Navy to chose from ; who led the Force with distinction .I am from Air Force but support the issue that we should have an Admiral of the Fleet

  11. But why does the navy need an Admiral of the Fleet? Is it because both the Army and the Air Force have had 5 star officers and the Navy is feeling left out? Or that it would nice to have since there are a number of 5 tar officers elsewhere? Frankly none of those make any sense to me and I do not see any need for one. As it is with the various cadre reviews in the past two decades and AV Singh report thereafter, the ranks are already greatly devalued and let the conferment of the highest rank in the Navy to an individual be reserved for a special individual for a singular achievement of unparalleled degree.

    One must resist the temptation.

    Disclaimer-I wore white once.

  12. adm mehta is the chosen one – if the polls were to be held in navy / other two services also.
thats for showing spine in times when everyone around seemingly lacks one
