  1. The guys look spirited which is good,,why do every second person has a different uniform,,i have noticed it on many occasions, shouldnt a group be of same uniform..

  2. the guy 2nd from the left has a sten-gun…way obsolete.

all the mp5s and AKs are with guys protecting corrupt politicians….

the army will never give good stuff to our jawans….its truly tragic…

  3. What is the problem with our country?
Why can't we have a well dressed military or police force. Many of them look like mechanics from some garage.
I remember those pics of our paratroopers with peeled paint ww2 helmets standing next to US troops during some exercise. It was embarrassing.

Hmm..Those fit and well dressed are from Parachute Regiment. But if you see their operational pics in J&K, they look the same "bedraggled, unfit, middle aged coolies wearing shabby uniforms" types. In fact, look at any Kargil pics. They are the same bedraggled and unfit "coolies" who are are sacrificing their lives for you. But we are like this only. If you want style and looks, go watch a Hollywood flick.

  5. Shiv,
Will you allow any comment to be published? Even those that call the jawans as bedraggled Coolies (anon 8:24)? Don't tell me that it is freedom of speech. If so, will you also allow Terrorist/Pakistani propaganda to be spread through your forum? When we post a comment, the message says that "Your comment has been saved and will be visible after blog owner approval."
Do you approve of Anon 8:24's comment?

  6. The boys look like they are ready to fight but their equipment looks like it's from ww2. Even the chopper (I know it does the job and we just bought heaps of them) it looks a little dated. The problem with the future infintry program is that it is always in the future, so the day our warriors jump from dhuruvs in digital camo and good boots with great carbines will be a day I celebrate.

  7. Like a good Journo are you also on the pampered list? We dont have war correspondents these days. Even HT & TN when in Libya had some good stage managed coverage of a rag tag group firing into the air. impressive for the 'bloody civilian'. The Slithering seems to be done on some parade ground whit chuna-gheru et al. get your boots muddy sweety. Ride a BMP on an obstacle Xing at 0200 hrs etc. Enjoy life in the Army & recommend that the Dy secys & above from army HQs must be a part of these exercises. Let them experience the difference between sliming around South Block & crawling around the deserts.

  8. Shiv,
I thought you had more maturity than that guy who wants to hide the truth by whining about fake patriotism just like our Govt and other sarkari outfits does on a regular basis. I am really disappointed.
The fact is we spend tons on our defense and these guys are not only in poor shape ( look at their physique) but also not dressed properly. It seems their uniform has not changed for the last several decades and the ones that they are wearing is also dirty and old.

  9. Mr Gaur,
India is a free and democratic country. People are free to express their opinions. And in this country the press is also free. It seems you have the mentality of the Chinese and Pakis where truth is stifled whenever it threatens or embarrasses the powers that be. I didn't call them coolies but I said they are looking like one. Hope you understand the difference. The moral and strength of the army can be gauged by their appearance. You will never find the best armies of the world dressed shabbily. Appearance speaks volumes. Why don't we find the Chinese or US forces looking filthy and bedraggled even in the heat of the battle? They get new uniform on a regular basis. From these pics it seems our Jawans are treated no better than servants (batman) or coolies. These pics only show the poor shape our army is in. I wonder what happens to the tons of money that we spend in the name of defense? If we can buy 5th Gen fighters, can't we afford proper uniforms for our jawans? Btw, these soldiers look like they have not exercised for years.
    Shiv,
We like your blog bcoz people can express their opinions freely. If we are barred from commenting on something that is obvious, then you are harming your own credibility as a journalist whose job is to bring out the truth.

  10. Gaur,
You are being paid to do a job and not "sacrifice your life" for anyone. If you can't take care of yourself, then you will always be "sacrificing yourself" in battle. No wonder you did such a pathetic job in Kargil. If the Israelis didn't supply us those LGB, we could have kissed Kargil goodbye for ever. We expect you to behave like a professional and not like some melodramatic Bollywood hero. This is a feedback from the masses. Hope you have the courage to digest that and take corrective actions.

  11. Gaur,
Al patriotic Indians are proud of our troops. And they know their sacrifices. But this does not mean we should not speak the truth. No one is blaming the soldiers for being shabbily dressed, being unshaven orhaving poor physique.
It is the fault of the Govt.
Have you ever seen US or Nato troops in warzones? Why do they look so well maintained?

  12. Shiv,
I request you to do a report on how well maintained the ordinary Indian soldier is.Everything from the uniforms, boots, to their food they are provided.Their physique is nothing impressive, I dont know whether they even get enough nutrition.
Forget about US, I have seen pictures of Sri Lankan soldiers in battle, even they seem to be in a better state that our troops.

  13. Shiv,
this is a humble request to you that please post some pics of the personnels equipped with complete operational gears or mention it using text to make current technological estimates per soldier of our army.

This is a sincere request that please do it if possible. Please

Just to make it clear, I do not serve in Armed Forces. However, I have had the privilege to be in close contact with them, especially the Army. And while the Army Officers would be the first to admit the need for modernization of equipment, no one can accuse them of being incompetent (both physically and mentally). Run 40 kms with 25-30 kg battle load and you will "partially" get an idea of their toughness. It is for nothing that the "good looking" Western Armies come to train at IA's schools. The infantry training schools such as CIJWS & HAWS, which are not even SF schools of IA, train US Special Forces.
But in a way, I understand your opinion. If you were to go by looks, even US Police SWAT forces are better than IA's PARA SF. But look at the operational history (like recent Op Khukri), IA has overcome in places where western Armies have succumbed. If you have an opportunity, please go and watch any infantry unit in training and you will understand how looks can be misleading.

  15. Anon 10:45,
I doubt if you are from India. But if you are (just the thought makes me cry), why don't you join Army and show them how to do the job? Hope you have the courage to do that?
Anyway, this is my last response on this topic. Such discussion (and I am being polite here) on Internet have a tendency to go on for eternity.

  16. @Anon 7:48, 11:09, 8:12 PM- Dear they are having such weapons because they seems to the officers of the tank crew of mechanized forces. It can be guessed from the cloth they are wearing on their head. hahaha Dont worry about their weapons. Infantry must be having modern gears an weapons and thats what I had asked from Shiv to show us them.

And your uniform will look like this only when you`ll have to work in 40 degree celcius plus temp. So dont just start shouting, first try to understand what the actual scenario is.

  17. Looks like they are from tank regiment and when you work in 40 plus degree Celsius, you would not care how you look. One should not compare India to china…the photos they release go through multiple levels of approval and to create a false impression. Everything there is state controlled. Our infantry solders are fairly dressed in combat.

  18. The Army should recruit Rambo, Schwarzenegger,Steven Seagal and Chuck Norris etc to maintain good photographic sessions and this should be their only job. Stills from their action films can also be added up to the various PR exercises.

  19. if this is the best that the IA has then its no wonder PakArmy, which is third the size of IA doesn't respect them at all….they also have better physique and battledress…..then again this is looks!!!! its just embarrassing to see professional soldiers look like this….

  20. Yes and still paki army still get their ass kicked by the indian army. 1965,1971,1999,every war pakistan got their ass handed to them by indian army, and still they need paki army's "respect"? Man some comments are indeed funny!! Like Gaur said , the fitness stamina and endurance required to participate in these war games would most possibly kill keyboard commandos like us. So to all enlightened commentators, think before you type, like many things in life and from observing thousands of dumbass one liners in this forum, looks does not always matter. Better equipments are always neccesary, but the most important are the men holding them. As they say you can hire mercenary millitia, you have to build an army, a well disciplined army is not for sale to anyone, anywhere in the world!

  21. @MPatela@MPaki is back,
LOL,back with his illusions and fantasies of grandeur!
LOL paki army has better physique and battle dress!!
This coming from a nation/army that specialises in lying, mass surrender and running downhill. Here guys take a look at the better -battledress and physique of the Pak army in Siachen!!!Check the battle chaddars!!!

    http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,2051600_2239249,00.html

Poor pakis, they do not even compare to Indian logistics and support personnel too!

  22. For all those A-Holes who think that clothes maketh a man let me tell them that they are cordial invited to the war games in a tuxedo. They can partake of the delicious emergency rations packed for 72 hours, gulp sand in the desert sun baked at 45 degress. And- off course the conditioned climate where sweating is difficult(sweat evaporates before its on the skin).
So dumb- asses – be it a Paki or an Indian soldier while training for war dont expect him to be in sun printed orange Hawai T -shirt and bermudas with geisha gurls swaying behind them to a coochie-coochie mambo.
YES if you want to improve their lifestyle – join them when they go meet the President – The so called Supreme Commander of the Armed forces with a petition written with their blood to improve their status in the Govt. Do you have it in you to do that or would you prefer to come out with such wimpish bitchy remarks?

  23. People like the above commentators are the ones who will ensure that India remains a backward country. They try to cover up our backwardness (and their inferiority complex) thru fake patriotic sermons. These are the very people who will give an arm and leg to settle abroad. If looks weren't so important why do Bollywood movies rope in scantily clad firangis when there isn't any dearth of Indian girls willing to shed their inhibitions to make a fast buck? Why has our experiment with Indian cheerleaders in the current IPL bombed so badly?
Forget US or China. Just checkout the uniform and appearance of soldiers of SriLanka, Nepal and Bangladesh. Even they appear much smarter than these guys. We are not commenting about their looks but the quality of their uniform and physique. If the top general is found to be sporting a pot belly, what can you expect from the men he is supposed to lead?

  24. People forget, it is not only the men/strategy but massive ordnance which ensures which side will win in a conventional war. Here India beats Pakistan any day anytime, and this is the reason why they have failed to win any wars against India and not due to their being inferior in any way.
If the role is reversed, then India will also lose all battles against Pakistan. In other words it is the resources and ability to get them in the right place in right time (aka cold start) that will ensure victory.
Technology also plays a vital role in determining the winner or loser in any battle. India has always been far more technologically advanced than Pakistan. In early 60s Pakistan might have a qualitative edge, but that was quickly dented by massive modernisation of our armed forces after 1962 Indo China conflict.

  25. @Moron@4:30
What is wrong if Concerned Indian citizens question why their troops do not seem to have gear even half the quality of western Militaries?
You A-hole, have you seen US personnel in combat zones in Afghanistan and Iraq?
Forget US, just try finding pictures of the Sri Lankan military i combat against the LTTE.
