The missile fired from the ground based launcher successfully intercepted the target in mid-air. Lakshya, the indigenously developed Pilotless Target Aircraft was used as the target. Astra is a ‘state of the art’, ‘Beyond the Visual Range’ (BVR) air to air missile being developed for the air force. Some more tests will be carried out from the ground launchers to generate data, which will be followed by launches from various aerial platforms.

  1. Too late too less range. They should have tested this a decade earlier. If they can do AAD this should not have taken much time. Test if fast and enhace the range to 120kms and make it standard on all IAF aircrafts.

Shiv, I heard somewhere that Astra is also being developed as a SAM(Surface to Air)….Is this test a part to validate the SAM characteristics?

  3. Too heavy and bulky, would take another 10 years to get into service. Remember Nag, Trishul – even after 20 years of development not in service yet.

  4. Whatever happened to the Shaurya Missile??? Last it was seen in 2010 republic day parade, didnt hear of any tests or development related news after that????
