Meet The 4 Fighter Pilots Chosen For India’s 1st Crewed Space Mission

The Indian Government today announced the names of the four Indian Air Force fighter pilots who will be astronauts on the country’s first ever crewed space mission, Gaganyaan. Trained in Russia, the four pilots are currently undergoing the rest of their mission training at a special ISRO facility in India. The mission, slated for no sooner than 2025, will make India the fourth country after the United States, Russia and China to independently send humans into space.

The four fighter pilots will be India’s first humans in space since Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma flew into space on board the Russian Soyuz T-11 in April 1984. Several persons of Indian origin have since been on space missions — notably Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams — though the four men announced today will be the first Indian astronauts on a space mission developed and executed entirely by and in India.
