I would say among diesel subs, there are better ones, like the German U-212/214 or the Kochkum. I recall in war games, the older Kochkum Gotland was a real handful for US Navy, and in war games in the Mediterranean, it sank a few French nuclear attack submarines, and even an SLBM. The Japanese subs, which are reputed to be the best and most advanced diesel subs, licensed Kochkum X-tail and their AIP.
